Hi all! I am a 31 yr old female with a 5 yr old daughter and loving husband. I started having unusual symptoms on July 3, 2010. The very first symptom was a small area of redness around the corner of my lips and what looked to be like a fever blister. I woke up with swelling arounds the lips the next morning. I had never had fever blisters but went to a clinic for a diagnosis and medication. The doctor at the clinic did not take much of a look at me before diagnosing me with a fever blister and giving the medication he thought I needed. The next day I started to get a blister on the inside of my cheek. This blister continued to grow. After seeing another MD and another misdiagnosis I was sent to a dermatologist. The Dermatologist initially thought it might be Shingles. He stated it would continue to be painful for a while but would go away and I would have anymore problems with it. He was again wrong! I continued to have ulcers in my mouth about every couple of months or so. I was put on Dapsone for the ulcers.

The dermatologist did biopsies a total of three times and never got any other useful information from them. I worked with someone that has crohns and she suggested that I get screened for it. So I proceeded and had a colonoscopy that revealed a normal colon. I have not had any diarrhea or bloody stools. I am asking you guys to just give me some advice. I have since moved and have had to start all over with new doctors. I am wondering if I need to push the possibility of having crohns. I have recently seen a rheumatologist and he is not sure of what I have either. So, again my symptoms are intense lower back pain then redness around the lower lip with tingling and swelling about a day or so before the blisters show up. Then the blisters show up all over the mouth and are painful and take a good week or two to go away. I did have some abdominal pain but that cannot be ruled out as female related pain. I feel like my intestines quiver sometimes. In fact that happened so much at the beginning of all this that I took a pregnancy test thinking it was fetal movement. I have not had a mouth full of blisters in a while but I have continued to have mild blisters. Do these symptoms sound like crohns symptoms. Do the flare ups have a degree of really bad sometimes and not too bad other times. Please give me your thoughts.

HI Mindy :welcome: to the forum. I can't say it is or isnt crohns but it can be in the mouth and thru the digestive system to the anus. Can be any where. I have canker sores and "fever" blisters often, but I learn to catch them early. It is also hereditary in my family as well as IBD. Lower back pain can be contributed as well but could be something else.

I would get your bloodwork done and vitamin D levels and b12 and magnesium and see what is low and go from there.

Sorry not much help but it could be the start of IBD it may not. :hang: Keep us posted.

Hi Mindy and welcome! I'm so sorry you've been having so much trouble. :(

If your colonoscopy was clear (I assume they did biopsies?), there's a reasonable chance that you do not have Crohn's Disease, especially if they were able to see into your terminal ileum and it was ok as well. It wouldn't be where I'd be looking first.

I assume you've had routine blood work done? Was it normal?

I would:

1. Start a food diary. Believe it or not, what you're experiencing can be dietary related. You may want to go on an elimination diet first to see if the ulcers start to clear up.

2. I'd take a B Complex vitamin. Sometimes mouth ulcers like you speak of can be caused by a deficiency in one of the B vitamins.

I wish you well. I hope you update us to your progress :)

Hmm, i never assumed that the two could be linked.

For about 2 months now i've had cold sores and weird dry skin around my mouth which turned from black to brown. They pretty much covered 75% of my lips. Would burn when ever i ate or drink or even opened my mouth for whatever reasons. My doctor finally gave me some cream for it which was extremely affective. 2 days and most of it's gone.

I would also like further information on the subject please :)
