New and bizarre symptom

I have been in flare for a while now... but late last night/early this morning brought out a new symptom that I don't understand.
When I had a bowel movement today, I passed a strange orange oily substance along with my stool...

Any ideas? I stumped our local nurse's line.

What have you been eating? The first thing that came to my mind was pasta sauce, possibly because I just washed up some bowls that had pasta in, and the sauce left an orange oily tidemark in the sink! Other things could be artificial colours, or certain spices.

If it wasn't something you ate, could it be something like stomach acid or bile? I remember once as a kid I was very sick, and after repeated bouts of vomiting I was bringing up something orangey (definately not something I ate because I was on rehydration fluids only, and this was after bringing up clear water) maybe it's that coming out the other end?

I have mostly been eating jello or rice for the last three days, because everything else hurts to eat.

According to the GI who called me back, it could be unprocessed fat, but he can't say for sure without a sample.

Wow, that is one I never had! If you figure it out let us know please.

I hope you feel better soon. Hopefully the very limited bland diet will help quickly.

Interesting! Thank you for the link Astra!
My doctor wants to arrange a CT scan of my abdomen to rule out pancreatitis, but this seems more plausible considering I'm in a flare up...

I've experienced that myself, that strange orange oily stuff in my poo. I could never quite figure out what it was, but I assumed it must be undigested fat. I've tried to cut down on fatty foods and I'm now eating mostly low-residue foods, and I haven't noticed the orange oil since I've changed my diet. But that's odd that you say you're only eating jello and rice - that doesn't sound like diet would be causing it. I would notice the orange oil after eating something like pizza - something high in fat and oily that would be a likely suspect. I now only rarely eat pizza (and I eat a healthier version of it than I used to) so it's been months since I've experienced the orange oil in my poo.

Let us know if you find out anything definitive, I'd like to know myself since I've experienced the same thing! Good luck with the CT scan!

Just wanted to let you know. The doctor has a stool sample and blood work, but is pretty sure it's my body's inability to process fats or nutrients causing this symptom.
I will post as soon as he tells me what's what.
Thanks for all of your advice and help!!!

OMG! I've started getting that too! I don't know what the heck it is and it worries me very much

I'm on Elemental 028, but I've been on it before and not had this orange stuff so it really concerns me.

Please post up here the Doctor's findings when you have them because I'd love to know what on earth that is.

You take care chick xxx

Wow - this forum is awesome. I just started and love it. I am finding it so interesting to read about all of this...I don't feel so alone.

I have not had oily bowel movements but I did freak out one day after having something that looked like pencil shavings. It hurt so much to pass too. I had such a bad flare and thought for sure it was part of a bone or something. I was so terrified...I pretended for a day or so that it didn't happen and just ate jello and rice. Well, I happened to look closer the next time it happened and it was maroon in color on one side and white on the other...AHHHH...it was part of the Asacol tablet. Everything was going through me so fast it didn't disolve completely. I don't read all of the warnings anymore on meds because I get freaked out. Boy did that hurt. They should make it in gelcaps! Just thought I would share.
