Hi There,

My name is Bethany and I am almost 32 years old. I was diagnosed with Crohns Disease in the Spring of my first year of college after what started with acid reflux and progressed to weight loss, stomach cramping, constipation, incredible stomach pain that would cause a spiked fever for a few minutes that would then return to normal, and finally bloody diarrhea and not being able to get out of bed that led to having to quit school that term. I ended up in the hospital for 8 days, getting a blood transfusion, iv food and prednisone, etc.

I had one flare up just over a year later which was treated with about 3 months of Prednisone. I was also on Asacol and I think Azothiprine (sp?) for about a year. I then lost health insurance and was feeling better so quit all meds.

Since then I have had minor issues like possible lactose intolerance and sensitivity to certain other foods that caused a day to 4 days of diarrhea. Then about 6 months ago I started to get more on and off diarrhea for more like a week out of every month instead of a day out of every month. In December I felt a little worse and has a little acid reflux.

Then in March I got my yearly women's exam. I have a growth in my cervix that needs removed and so the exam was painful. Afterwards I was in a fair amount of pain for the rest of the day. The next day I started getting shooting pains up my back, especially when sitting or laying down. They got worse, I called the dr and they said they were probably cervical spasms and should go away and to just use pain meds. Then like 4 days after the exam it turned into lower left side and later lower left and right side pain. I ended up going to another dr a week later, got a urine test done, and she said she thought it was likely my Crohns flairing up and that the uterus is close to the small bowel so this was probably where the Crohns was acting up in.

Since then I have been on vicodin until I can see a GI May 11th. I visited my sister in CA just after my exam/diagnosis and had mostly minor to medium pain but twice threw up, something I NEVER do. Once was after a Margarita (I rarely drink) so I thought it must be related to that even though it was one drink, or maybe related to taking my anti-anxiety meds not long after drinking it.

But then we went to Disneyland and I had pineapple juice. Within about 10 minutes I felt AWFUL and couldn't get up off the ground of Mark Twain's riverboat. I made it off the boat and across to the first aid station before throwing up outside of it and again in the restroom inside. I was in immense pain, the worst since my original Crohns symptoms.

Gradually since then I've gotten better. I also saw a reflexology doctor who gave me some digestive enzymes and meds for parasites he thinks I might have. He also recommended mostly a meat and veggie diet with no peppers, tomatoes, nuts or wheat. I have stuck to that about 90% since.

So my mian two questions are the following, 1) I am still primarily having pain that starts as middle/lower back pain and then turns into Crohns type stomach pain. I don't remember back pain at all when my Crohns was bad before, does anyone else have this? 2) Has anyone had a Pap smear or similar exam trigger Crohn's symptoms or a flare up?

Thanks so much,

Bethany

Hello welcome :)

I do not have the most helpful information for your issue as I cannot relate with past experiences. There might be some others throughout the day that can be helpful. I can recommend however to get a second opinion and or keep pushing your doctors for more answers. Another scope or small bowel series cannot hurt since you possibly have not has one in a long time. There are many possibilities that could be going on, I would go and push for more answers.

Hi Bethany,

Welcome, I'm glad you found your way here. I'm sorry you've been having a tough time of it.

I'm a guy of course, so I'm really not in any place to comment on your second question, BUT, I think anything stressful or traumatic like what you had done can certainly trigger symptoms. You may want to pose that question in the girl's only forum. If you want to, please contact me for a password to it as we keep it locked so us guys don't get nosy :)

Anyway, see you around. I hope you continue to feel better and better!

Hi Bemmy and welcome! I am so sorry to hear your Crohn's has been acting up. And to ruin your time in Disney - ugh!

When I was first diagnosed, I did experience some back pain. It actually was pretty bad, but I haven't had problems with it in months (knock wood). I have noticed several others on the forum complain of back pain, too. But, I can't say I had a female exam trigger a flare.

I sure hope you can get your symptoms under control soon before they get worse. And I agree with Jenn, you should really consider getting some testing done if you haven't had any in awhile. Regular testing is very important. Good luck!

Hi Bethany and welcome!

If I am reading your report right, it sounds like you haven't had a colonoscopy, upper gi series, pill cam, SBFT or CAT scan to see what's going on inside, is that right??? I would suggest that you discuss all of these things with the GI on 5/11. A full panel of blood work would also be in order to make sure you are not low in iron or any major vitamins.

Be careful with the vicodin. Any narcotics slow down the GI system and can really make symptoms worse while masking them.

Vomiting is never a good sign and can really signify something serious, like an blockage or obstruction. Please make sure you tell all of this to the GI!

Good luck getting things sorted out. I hope you can get the cervix thing taken care of without too much upset to your Crohn's.

- Amy

PS Are you from Pittsburgh area??

Thanks for the advice, I had a colonoscopy and Upper and I think Lower GI, during/right after my first flare-up. I have had a complete blood panel since that showed low iron (I almost always have had low iron but it was lower than normal-ive been on bc to help with this) and also showed signs of inflammation in a test that tests for that.

How often do these tests get re-done? Is once enough or does knowing the current status via tests like the Colonoscopy help the doctors with treatment?

Thanks,

Bethany

Bethany - the toughest part of having a chronic illness is learning how to "manage" the medical system in our country ... and managing the doctors and their assitants. With the syptoms of pain and vomitting you are having, your GI should not be seeing you in another week, he should be seeing you tomorrow. I agree with Ames ... your GI needs to hear about your symptoms. Call your docs office in the morning and tell them they have to squeeze you in asap with the flare up symptoms you are having. Are you having any kind of drainage? If you are having any kind of drainage you could have a fistula that is abcessing. That was my first Crohns syptom which I had 28 years ago. It started with a painful yearly pap - I almost jumped off the table. The fistula ran the length of my vagina from my bowel and it hurt everywhere. I have been dealing with the fistulas ever since.

If it is a fistula and it is starting to abcess, it can go septic and can cause the vomiting. Flagyl and a CT scan might be in order.

Call the docs office in the AM and demand that the little gals who answer the phone get you in asap!

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
