Hi my name is dean and I'm from Davenport Iowa. When I was 32 I had what they called famila polyposus or something close to that, anyway, I had to have most of my colon removed and a J-pouch made out of my small intestine. This was good for many years. However about 5 years ago I developed a fistula and had to have C-tons put in to keep it drained or surgery I didn't want any more major surgeries so I did the C-tons, now though everything has been getting worse and the docs say I have crohns and probably have had it for years but with the other stuff going on it was just missed. I now have to wear liners in my shorts to catch the drainage from the C-tons and my system is becoming more intolerant of what ever I eat. So now in order to avoid another surgery and probably a colostomy the doc wants me to watch every thing I eat and record how it effects me. I'm told there are no certain diets for my condition with the missing colon and all, however I'm hoping that some of you may have some suggestions for me on what to and not to eat! I'm 52 now and would like to work another 6 years before going for any surgery that may make it impossible for me to continue to work in the position I'm in. Thanks for reading about my little problems I know many of you have problems also. If you have any advice for me please let me know and if I can help you let me know about that too. Dean

Hello Dean and welcome to the forum :)

Just to confirm that docs have not got you on any meds? I have not had a fistula myself so could not advise on treatments/diets that would help but we do have a sub forum that is worth checking out to have a chat with others who have these for some helpful info: http://www.crohnsforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=76. We do also have a diet and sups forum that is worth looking at for some hints in this area as well: http://www.crohnsforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17. One thing I have always been told is to avoid things with skins, nuts and pips as these do aggrivate the bowel, otherwise it does tend to depend on each individual as to what gives them problems.

Wishing you all the best.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
if you think you are up to it, go for a week on a high nutrient/mineral liquid supplement, just to rest everything. Then keep a food journal. Introduce one food every three days(I've found it takes that long to be sure the food is okay) keep an eye out for all symptoms ie: sore joints even in the fingers and toes, headache, upset tummy, dry skin. You will notice these more with practice. I started with brown rice, chewed well. Get more bang for your buck protein wise and you actually feel like you're eating something. Add in vegies cooked well, think mush. and save the water to cook your rice in or to drink chilled. I know it sounds gross but it worked for me. Just go from there with your favorite foods. Hope everything heals up quick. :)

Hi Dean and welcome.

Where specifically have they detected active Crohn's disease in your intestines? What tests have they done to map where your Crohn's disease is active? And what are your specific symptoms?

All my best to you.
