So had a new symptom pop up while here in the hospital...my mouth/throat has started hurting. There are tiny little bumps all over my tongue, with larger ones further on back of tongue. I have rough sore patches all over the roof of my mouth and insides of cheeks. There are larger bumps on the sides on my tongue like ulcers I guess? It hurts to eat, talk, brush my teeth, etc. Hurts to swallow and almost feels like something gets stuck from time to time. It feels like how it feels when you burn your tongue...except my whole tongue/mouth feels that way. Any ideas??

I'm currently in the hospital for a flare/c diff infection. I'm on:
Flagyl IV, Vanco Oral, Vanco Enema, Fentanyl patch, Fentanyl IV, Norco, Protonix, Bentyl, Zofran, Phenagran, Prenatal vitamin, & Dulcolax stool softener Oh and started me on some mouth swish/swallow today for this

My first thoughts were thrush from the antibiotics for c diff but the dr looked at it today and said it didn't look like thrush. My Mom said it looks exactly like what she got randomly when she was going through cemo for bone cancer. I'm wondering if anyone has had something similar.

I did a quick search. It looks like transient lingual papillitis which inflammatory condition of the taste buds pretty much. From what I read it is a common condition, mostly observed on kids. The symptoms seem to match, burning sensation and being inconvenience while eating/drinking and well, the bumps. They don't really know what causes it but it usually fade away in a matter of a few days (I've seen 6-7 days mentioned a few times). Sometimes it can be food, it can also be cause by GERD, it seems it can be triggered by a burn, sometime cause by gastrointestinal disorder (we can probably assume our IBD thing would fit there). There are no specific treatment, they suggest using salted water/mouth wash and it usually clears up on its one.

I don't know if that's really what it is, but that is what I found that look the more similar.

I know you say the doc doesnt think its thrush but It sounds like thrush I have had it all 3 times I've taken flagyl and it's really rotten. Hope it clears soon.

Thanks to both of you. When I googled it I found it looked like "strawberry tongue". I'm hoping GI comes by today so I can ask them as I really do not like the internal med dr who's on rotation the past few days :( she's the one who said it wasn't thrush and is wanting to do a barium follow through because it's also causing difficulty swallowing

when I had the thrush it definitely affected more of the back of my throat/tongue and I can't remember my tongue looking like yours. I hope you get some answers soon as your having a tough pregnancy so far. Hope it settles soon.

Hopefully the hospital you're at has the new form of barium. Now days its just a small cup of the stuff and its much smoother and creamier and tastes a little like some sort of citrus. Either way, you don't have to take much down so I wouldn't worry about the swallowing too much. My guess is you're more worried about the test with the x-ray and all that being harmful for the baby. I don't recall but was there mention of an ultrasound or MRI?

Well they did the barium swallow test which was normal. There isn't anything actually getting stuck its just the feeling I'm having. Crohns GI specialist said it looks like the start of ulcers forming in my mouth so he's going to start me on another swish mouthwash. Basically just gonna keep an eye on everything.

The swallow test/barium was disgusting. I had to have it postponed because just the ride down there in the wheelchair made me start dry heaving I've been so neauseous. I somehow managed to not puke it up tho and was glad they were so quick and efficient because that stuff was nasty! I had 4 different types of barium nastiness...I'm cringing just remembering it haha. But I'm glad it came back normal :)
