Hiya, i am 29 years ols and have just recently been diagnosed with crohns disease after nearly 14 years of hospital admissions, tests and illness on and off. I was hospitilised for a week on iv steriods and am now been commenced on oral steriods and pentasa until I see my consultant to take things for there. i went back to work a week after discharge from hopsital then ended up back in a and e due to extreme pain and vominting and required strong analgesia and anti-emitics and got told fom the medical staff I returned to work too soon as this is my first time being activily treated for a flare up i am unsure of how long does it take to start feeling better and return to some kind of normal? i am still in quite a lot of pain and experiancing symptoms however not as severe as when i was hosptilised. Also is it quite normal to feel emotional and down after diagnosis sometimes I feel ok other times I feel like bursting into tears and wondering how this will affect me life. Also any hints and tips on how to manange crohns disease would be very much appriciated! thanks.

Hello Jedig
Sorry to hear you are having some problems and hope you will soon feel better.
It is natural to feel emotional about the diagnosis and all the symptoms it brings, also the steroids may make you feel like this.
In time you will feel better and able to cope.It is after all a big diagnosis to take at a young age.
You will start to feel a bit better with the treatment and later your GI specialist may prescribe other drugs for you.
Just take it easy and don't be in a hurry to get back to work, you need recovery time after being in hospital. It was much too soon to return from work and your hospital doctors should have given some indication as to the optimal time for you to return.
I would suggest once things settle down a bit and the pain is manageable may be the time to think of work.Just ask the doc and be guided by the information given by them.
The flares may last a few days to a few weeks everyone is different, but treatment should help you especially the steroids.
The docs will reduce the steroids gradually and introduce other medicines to help you.
Managing the crohns is up to the doctors but also you can play a part in it.
For me, I find exercise helps such as walking, going to the gym several times a week and doing whatever feels comfortable there---not always easy.
Walking is about one of the easiest exercises and there is always a seat somewhere.
You will feel better when you are strong enough to do these things.
Everyone's crohn's is different especially when diet is concerned. Some can pinpoint foods that upset them others the type of food makes no difference.
You might like to visit other sites on the forum that deal with diet and find some recipes that might be helpful to you.
Feel better soon
Hugs and best wishes

Thanks so much for your kind words of support and advice, I did rush back to work too soon but now I am taking the time to get my health right first i now know this is something I wont recover from in a week. Thanks again for your reply it makes me feel better talking to other people with IBD as they understand what im going though and I know I am not alone in this x

Hiya,

Just thought Id let you know your not alone..Im also 29 and was diagnosed with Crohns tbree weeks ago! Ive had various problems for nearly two years with things getting worse. luckily I havnt been hospitalized (you poor thing) but I understand how it feels to be told you have a chronic disease that will never go away :-( Ive started on Prednisolone and mesalazine whichare starting to do their job physically. I go back in two weeks go see my gastroenterologist..hopefully we will talk about reducing the steroids and just using the mesalazine. It is possible to get Crohns under control and lead a normal life. I have a friend at work who has been completley in remission for 6 years and had a baby a couple of years ago!

Chin up..I hope your medication helps you soon. I have found (despite the embarressing nature of it) telling as many people as possible and explaining exactly what the disease is helps a lot as then people understand what your going through.

All the best :)

Hi and welcome. It is a hard diagnosis to get into your head. Take your time and let it all sink in. While there was a part of me that felt relief at finding out what was wrong with me, there was another part that mourned for the person I thought I was. Not that a disease can identify you, but still, a chronic disease? After awhile you'll feel better. Learn as much as you can, tell as many people you are comfortable telling, and check out this website. It has sooo much wonderful information!
