:sign0085:After seven years of going backward and forward to doctors with several different symptoms, the consultant diagnosed me with crohns, after a colonoscopy. I am awaiting an MRI scan as he thinks it could also be higher up in the gut as well as lower intestines. Have just finished course of steroids and am now having a flare up, including sores in my mouth and painful joints, as well as stomach pains and diarrhea. I have had to take time of work, which my boss isnt too happy about as xmas is our busiest time. I am on pentasa granules. Is there anything else I can do to relieve symptoms? I have been on a soup and bovril diet for a few days now. Any advice would be welcome.

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Just to confirm did things improve when you were on the steroids? Could you tie in the return of the symptoms with these being stopped? How long have you been on the Pentesa and at what dose are you on? You are already mainly following a diet I would suggest of bland, low residue foods so is there anyway you can get in contact with your doc to let them know you are having problems?

Hi, scoobs17! Welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry you're having such a rough time. I'm also wondering if the steroids helped? How long did you take them, and how long have you been taking the Pentasa? Your best bet would be contacting your doctor about it.

I hope things improve for you soon.

Hi Scoobs and welcome to the community.

Those sores in your mouth are often due to a vitamin deficiency. The most common one that people with Crohn's disease experience is vitamin B12 deficiency and it can lead to those sores. While getting the inflammation under control will help the most, having your doctor test you for B12 might be worthwhile as well.

There is a LOT to learn about Crohn's disease but I suggest you begin educating yourself as chances are, you're going to have to advocate for yourself. We're here to help you every step of the way.

Thanks guys for your advice. My doctor isnt much use, he was still none the wiser after 7 years of symptoms!! I dont have much faith in him anymore. Where as the consultant i see at the hospital is excellent and had me diagnosed within 6 weeks!! I am due to see him in February, but am still awaiting MRI scan. Feeling a bit better today, at the moment!! Could you please advise me whether it is ok to take anti-diarhea tablets when flaring up??

There's two schools of thought on that. Some say yes, some say no and I'm really not sure what is best. I'd suggest calling your consultant and see if they want you taking anti-diarrhea meds or not.

Just to chime in here, I frequently have ulcers in my mouth from Crohn's (they are quite unlike cold sores and very distinct) but I've been told time and again by my GI that I have no B12 deficiency and that my Crohn's is in "the wrong place" to cause one.
