Hi.

Has any of you had a colonoscopy and the doctor tell you that you were in severe pain during the procedure. I dont remember because of the drugs and the doctor said he was glad I dont remember. Apparently during the procedure he had to give me another dose of pain killers.
Is this commonw with crohns?? I asked my family doctor and he said it is very common with IBS and not crohns but I never asked my GI yet, i keep forgetting each time I see him.

Yes I think it is, and it's understandable really when you think about possible inflammation and ulcers that may be in your colon!

I remember coming around a bit from one of mine and screaming out in pain before they gave me more sedation.

Hi dauting , the colonoscopy is painful at times of flare up because they are sticking a tube up in the inflammation area. i have crohn's and when i have had a colonoscopy they always give me ativan. but ,it doesn't help very much with the pain. so yes you can have pain of the intestine due to crohn's. best wishes

I remeber points in my colonoscopy. One time they were blowing air in there and I remember trying to "get away" from the pain(pull myself foreward) then I passed out again. During my first scope I remember waking up right as he was pulling the camera out

Hello, I was in pain during my colonoscopy a couple of weeks ago but I've got quite a bit of inflammation at the moment so having a tube poke around at it obviously didn't help!

The doctor found no visible inflammation when I had my colonoscopy and I was crying with pain. I told them my weight etc. and clearly the amount of sedation they gaev me was not enough because I was very conscious the whole way through, felt everything, and yeah, started crying in pain. I think it's just because you're not really supposed to have a hosepipe snaking through your insides, and when he pumped the air in that's what caused the pain, it felt like the worst wind pains ever, it was horrible. I remembered everything and afterwards in the recovery room whilst everyone else was snoozing I was sat up fully awake. It basically only felt like I'd had a pint of strongbow, and then sobred up very quickly. And if someone tried to shove a hosepipe up my butt after only one pint I would DEFINITELY feel it. So I think what you described is probably normal.

I've had terrible pain during colonoscopy, even when I'm not flaring. The GI said it was because my colon would spasm every time he moved the scope, as well as when they introduced air. That's why I have it under sedation now.

This is what I did! I tried desperately to get away from them! I wasn't clear in my head so I wasn't aware of what was going on, just that I needed to get away! Haha. Luckily I was heavily sedated so me trying my damndest to get away was in actuality probably just a bit of fidgeting. Then they came and gave me more drugs and I was out again. My best guess is this happened once they reached my inflammation.

Hey Daunting, I have no idea why your doctor would think that it was common in IBS and not IBD. If anything, I think that open sores (ulcers) would cause you to feel more pain than a functional disorder. Your doctor is not thinking this through.

I had a doctor tell me that I should not be feeling pain because there are no nerves in the digestive system. That can't be true, either or we would not be able to control our bowels. We would have to be able to feel when there was stool or gas moving, or we would just go whenever. Sometimes doctors get things stuck in their minds (just like the rest of us) that don't make good sense when we think about them in depth.

And yes, lots of people are in pain when they have scopies. I have had them both directions and have had problems with pain during both of them. The best thing about my new doctor is that he uses Propofol instead of demerol and versed while he does a scopy. I don't wake up as easily with this stuff!! I do miss my old doctor in a number of other ways, though. One being his nurse. She is ultra efficient!!

Anyway, at least you don't remember it! I usually do remember waking up during a procedure, just not why I woke up. I try to look at the monitor, but then they realize I am awake and get zapped again. LOL!!

Thank you all,

It is good to know I am not alone, I remember my very first colonoscopy in 2005 I had ablsolultely no pain at all from it, that was when I was first told I had diverticulosis and that was it, 5 years for recheck and hear I am trying to get diagnosed for crohns.
