I found my path results from 2005 and 2007.

1. 2005, Clinically rectum: Colonic mucosa with regenerative change.
2. 2005, Clinically angularis: Chronic gastritis, marked.
3. 2007, Clinically distal colon: Biopsy was normal. However, the samples were labeled "distal patchy erythema." Also, the operative report said the mucosa of the rectum and sigmoid colon appeared erythematous.

Would any of these results indicate IBD?

Like I mentioned, I still have problems. They got worse in January 2012. My current GI doesn't want to do any follow up testing.

I don't know how to read the reports, but you might consider getting a new GI if you are not satisfied.... You know that just because one biopsy came back normal does not mean that you do not have IBD. I am not saying that you have IBD either, however, I have been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease through biopsy of the colon, but my last two colonoscopies showed no signs of Crohn's because the colon lining had healed up while I was in remission.

IBD is indicated when the pathologists finds granuloma's In crohn's they are in all three layers of the bowel wall and in colitis they are just in the mucosa layer. You can use some of these terms and google for a better idea and more accurate information. I'm going from memory here.

I was just wondering because inflammation/erythema showed up on the exam. I thought that could indicate IBD, or something other than IBS.

Apparently erythema means redness, so patchy redness and swelling. From what I have read the pathologists rely on finding the granuloma's for crohn's. Have you read and posted in the undiagnosed club?

Good luck with whatever it is. I hope you get better!

Unfortunately stinky that is right. It would seem that granulomas are the icing on the cake when it comes to a diagnosis of Crohn's. Of course not everyone with Crohn's has granulomas and if that is the case it will be dependent on your doctor to make the call based on what he sees.

My son has Crohn's but pathology has never supported that diagnosis due to the lack of granulomas. They term it as...no convincing evidence of Crohn's Disease.

Hi Dusty! Yes I know this disease likes to act special doesn't it? lol I had granuloma's with my biopsy and the path report still said that this only "suggests Crohn's disease" and to verify it with clinical diagnosis.

Would granulomas show up in Colitis? Also, what could have cause the inflammation/erythema?

crohnicaly stinky: I haven't posed iin the undiagnosed club yet.
