Hi I wanted to get some advice. I am going to the gastroenterologist today and of this morning I am going to try to drasticaly change my diet. I ordered the book "breaking the vicious cycle" but it has not arrived yet, I printed out the legal/illegal foods list and will try to study it. Meanwhile I am wanting to go on a liquid diet but I don't know how and I am 21 weeks pregnant and need to eat something at least for my baby. Can you recommend a couple of safe foods, is there even something like that. Like I feel like just drinking water and only eating one or two things that I can know will not put me in excrutiating agony. I don't know what those things might be... please help :sign0085:

Be very careful being pregnant, you have to make sure you get the right nutrients for you and your baby. Try Boost or Ensure drinks. They have a lot of calories and nutrients in them. I use to drink them 3 times a day. I am not clear on the diet in the book you ordered so I don't know what foods it allows or doesn't. Hope this helps.

hi designer, welcome to the forum, & congrats on your forthcoming baby :)

i'd just say, unless it's really necessary, maybe a strict liquid-only diet is a bit too drastic.. how about just going onto easily digestible foods (low residue diet) and see if that settles your symptoms at all? when things are bad with my stomach, i always turn to foods like mashed potato, clear or thick sieved soups (no lumps)..

let us know how the gastro appointment goes.

I would not advise right now for you to go on a liquid diet. Babies need lots of nutrition so you will need some solid foods. You will need some kind of carb so sweet potatoes or regular potatoes mashed could help you. Do you have diarhea or constipation. Toasted bread could also be helpful for you as it will help bulk up the stool. Keep a diary of things you can and can't eat. Start off with things most of us can eat and the get a little more adventurous.

Best of luck

Hi Designer, and welcome to the forum.
First of all - congrats on your upcoming arrival! I would second what Teeny said about the Boost or Ensure. Slim-fast can even be used if you use it as a supplement, not a replacement. It tastes better than the other two in my opinion. You might want to try bananas as they have a lot of calories packed into a small amount of food, and seem to be gentle on my stomach. I have also heard that avocados are a food that you could survive alone on if you had to. I don't know how the high fat in them will effect your belly, but it might be good for baby. (Check it out before you take my advice though)
I always feel good when I eat chicken salad and chicken rice cassarole. It's really mild on my belly, and the baby needs protien I think.
Something else to think about - I have been on a low-residue diet, that seems to be working fairly well. (Google it) I messed up last week and overdid it on fruit and I paid for it for 2 days. You might want to try low-resi if the other one doesn't work for you.
Good luck and hope you feel better.

Thanks everyone for your good wishes and welcoming me to the board.I went to the Gastro yesterday, he is doing whatever bloodwork on me that he can but did tell me he can't do much else until after I have the baby. I think that may give me the time I need to see if the "breaking the vicious cycle" diet will help me, so maybe after I have the baby IF I'm diagnosed I won't need meds. (One can hope) Im meeting tomorrow morning with Rochel Weiss(you can google her), she counsels people on this diet and also sells prepared foods for it and other safe foods on her website. I am optimistic about this :)
Yesterday I started sticking with the legal/illegal list and you know what I dont remember the last time I had made it to 6:30pm without being in terrible pain. Im not 100% comfortable now but I can tell a huge difference. I am super hungry though :( Im sure I will not starve though, Tomorrow Ill get lots of recipes and sudgestions on how to do this diet the right way. I also found a great protein drink made out of whey, I am going to start on that tomorrow and Im brewing up a big pot of chicken soup :)YUM

Yay...it sounds like you are happier now that youve chatted with the doc!! I was just going to add a couple of things that seem to give me no problems whatsoever: Melons...any kind, never had a problem with them. ever. Also, dry white bread or toast. If you can stand a bit of butter, or jelly of any kind, that may help with the bland-ness.

Good luck with the babe!!! That's so exciting!
