post resection adhesions...

Hi everyone

I was diagnosed in 1994, had an ilio-caecal resection soon afterwards followed by an obstruction and surgery for adhesions and then spent 17 years doing pretty well with no meds (but a lot of diarrhoea!) until...

March this year when I had a fairly horrible obstruction- a stricture was found (even though I had few symptoms) and I had another resection in June. I thought it would be plain sailing from there but I have had 2 emergency admissions since for obstructions. Recent tests seem to show the Crohns isn't back and adhesions are looking like the probable culprit. I am due to see my surgeon later this week- has anyone else been in this position post surgery? has anyone got much experience of surgery for adhesions? I am really hoping for a way forward on this because life with an obstruction every couple of months isn't very appealing!

thank you

Emma - I just had surgery to remove a fairly long stricture which had been giving me trouble for several years. I know that I have some adhesions from my previous resection, but so far they haven't caused me any problems. The stricture was from scar tissue where my terminal ileum was removed. I did find out that I have thinning of the abdominal wall, which makes me more prone to hernias.

Good luck with the surgeon's appointment, I hope you can get some relief without having another surgery!

By way of an update... I had a colonoscopy yesterday and it looks like there is a stricture at the anastomosis from my last resection- the surgeon couldn't get the scope through the narrowed gap. He tried a balloon dilation but the balloon burst (!) and there wasn't another available so I will be back for them to have another go in the next couple of weeks. It's good to have a better idea of what might be going wrong...I just hope that this might be relatively easily resolved. Do any of you have experience of balloon dilation?

Thanks

In reading my op report from my recent surgery, the doctor used something called Seprafilm. He said it was used to prevent adhesions in the immediate post op period (30 days).

How soon after surgery did you develop adhesions?
