prednisone side effects

Hi everyone its been a while, hope you're all well?

At the moment, i'm on prednisone 6 week course about to go down to 2 a day as of tomorrow and quite excited to finish it. The problem i've had is that I keep getting side effects such as 2 weeks ago it was insomnia, then last week I just felt really down and would start crying. Over the past few days been having some chest pains, so phoned my doctor who told me to go straight to A+E. Spent 5 hours in A+E last night where they done an ECG, blood tests, chest xray and couldn't find anything that would cause it and suggested it could either be Acid Reflux or just too much medication in my system and told me to take some gaviscon.

Also with the crohns, the pred's done a great job at clearing up my flare up and I started to feel like a whole new person again, but i've noticed signs of the crohns flaring back up, is this common when you start to get to the end of the steroids?

Any advice would be great, and apologies for the rambling!

Have a happy Wednesday :p

xx

oh should also mention i'm on 12.5mg mtx per week and taking 6 400mg asacol a day

Hi xmanda,
Prednizone does very well for the short term to settle down a flare and help the bowel heal:smile:. It should be avoided if at all possible for the long term. You have experienced side effects from it already and it will affect your bones, teeth if it is taken long term. You should talk to your doctor about your symptoms. It may be that you need to change the mtx and asacol for another maintenance type of medication. I hope you can stay off the the Pred. Take care.

I was on pred for months half a year ago and had loads of side effects as ursself i felt down. i didnt put on any weight but my face bloated. Everytime I started weaning of them reducing 5mg a week i would have a flare and end up in hospital hopefully you wont be on them too long and will stay farely well for a while.x

I totally feel bummed out now that I am starting to taper. I feel sad all day for no reason. I cant wait to finally be off the stuff. And yes you should tell your doctor if you feel your flare coming back.

I had the insomnia and was up very early in the morning for work while on them and yes you can feel a bit emotional at times because of them...so no worries there.
Each person is different with regards to how they will react to the steroids...hopefully you will have a goos out come. I had very small symptoms before the end of my course but it soon settled down.
Take care...

Thanks for all the advice, glad to know i'm not just going crazy. Got an appointment with gaestronology at the start of November, so will see if he's had any more thought on which medication is best for me to take..i'm betting he's not really thought about it haha.

x
