First of all, I'm sorry I keep making new threads but new stuff keeps coming up! S had her MRI tonight and the preliminary reading shows that the abscesses are most likely gone!!!!!! I know they've gotten smaller and smaller over the last 6-7 weeks (she was on Cipro, Flagyl and Diflucan for 3-4 weeks and Ertapenem and Diflucan these last two weeks). They said her bowel is very big so they are going to place a tube tonight to decompress her belly. Anyone have experience with that?

As far as the abscesses, if they're not quite gone can she still take Prednisone? I know it's not a great idea but two weeks ago they were very small and they started her on Remicade with them because they wanted to treat the Crohn's before THAT got worse. Doesn't the same logic apply to a stricture? I mean, isn't Prednisone pretty helpful in opening strictures?

I don't know the answer to your questions, but they are good questions. Let us know what the GI says when they round today.

If the stricture is due to inflammation then yes prednisone should work but whether or not it is a good idea with almost gone abscesses idk. Hopefully others with more experience will be by shortly.

Good to hear she is making progress.

If stricture is scar tissue then prednisone won't work on it.

I have no good advice but wanted to send my support. I'm SO glad the abscesses look like they're almost gone - that's progress!!

Are your daughter's doctors experienced with IBD? If so, they should be drawing on their experience as to whether prednisone would be helpful or harmful at this point. If they aren't experienced and/or you don't trust their judgement, it's time for a second opinion.

[[[HUGS]]] and hoping your daughter will be feeling much better and out of the hospital soon!

When my son had an abscess, we left the hospital on prednisone. That cleared his abscess. He did have some IV antibiotics also in hospital. Been on 3 rounds of Remicade and actually in the hospital now. Nothing seems to work right now. Dr. Are thinking too much stricture and scar tissue. He can't eat anything right now without total pain. Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday. They are thinking he most likely will have a colostomy bag.

Oh--I'm so sorry to hear this, kyoung. I'll be thinking of both your son and kernelmom's daughter this week. I'm really hoping that your kids won't need surgery, but if they do, I hope that it goes well for them and brings them a long remission. :ghug:

I'm sorry to hear it, kyoung. I'm glad your son has a good medical team, though, that is getting him the help he needs.

Kyoung I'm SO sorry to hear that!! (((HUGS))) to you and your son!!

They did see one abscess is still there but smaller so they started S on Prednisone and TPN. Between the meds and the NG tube to decompress, they are trying to get her belly to go down. As soon as it goes down, they'll do surgery. It's about 8cm of stricture right at the terminal ileum which is where the abscesses and fistula are because the perf happened there. If the inflammation goes down enough, she most likely won't need a bag. Please keep S in your thoughts and prayers!!

Praying for both your kiddos - I hope the surgeries go well and that they manage to avoid bags if possible. If a psychologist isn't already involved, I'd ask for your kiddo to see one - they have SO much going on right now!

Sending hugs :ghug:!

Kernelmom3 seems like we are going through the same situation. They are thinking Rob will need a bag because they think there is too much inflammation and scar tissue. They are thinking a 2-5 hour surgery tomorrow. I pray this helps. So tired of the pain he is going through. Thank you all so much for your thought s and prayers and hope all of your kids are feeling good!!

Kyoung, how did your son's surgery go? Praying for him and your family....please let us know! My daughter's surgery is tentatively scheduled for Monday. She is doing SO much better! Her belly is almost down to normal, she's going to the bathroom and the stuff coming out of her NG tube is clear. She's SO ready for this surgery and looking forward to going back to a normal life!

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers! Surgery went perfect. They did have to cut instead of doing it laproscopic. The doctor said he was just too swollen. The surgery was 4 hours long. They just had to take that one portion where crohns normally is. Everything else looked good. Today, his catheter, ng tube was removed. They started him on TPN. They are saying he can eat tomorrow. Thank goodness! He is so upset about not eating. Also, intestines is working because we are having to empty the bag. Doctor is pleased with everything. Now to get him used to the bag and hopefully 6 months to a year, they will reverse. Kernelmom3, praying all goes well on Monday! Keep us informed. Merry Christmas to all! I will be celebrating at the hospital, but I can't ask for a better gift than Rob feeling better![emoji319]
