My friend is Rob - a 47 year old male and is really struggling. He was diagnosed with Crohn's about 6 months ago and his GP wants to refer him for a second opinion. Does anyone out there have a good consultant they would recommend who has a special interest in Crohns?

He has been taking budesonide and is currently reducing the dose, and has been prescribed Mebeverine, neither of which appear to be reducing his symptoms - consistent and intense bloating to the point where he looks pregnant) and increasing lower abdomen pain/upper groin (currently taking antibiotics for a urine infection) he feels dizzy and sluggish, had headache and aching joints. He is still managing to work, but his weekends are pants. He is also down in the dumps as he can no longer be active and is gaining weight. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm sorry that your friend is having a hard time and not getting better.

I live in Bristol and am cared for by the Bristol Royal Infirmary. My Gastroenterologist is called Dr Tom Creed and he and the IBD department there are fantastic. I also have a brilliant specialist nurse. Because it's a teaching hospital they have much more access to trials and research. I can't recommend them enough.

If he's interested I go to a Crohn's support group based in Bristol. We meet quarterly, next meet is Saturday 26th April, at the Knights Templar Wetherspoons pub, behind Temple Meads station. We range in age from 18 to 60s and are more than happy to welcome anyone!

Thank you so much Lucinda, I will tell Rob, I have a month or so to persuade him to attend the support group. What time does it start please? Such a tough disease and others just dont "get" how dibilitating it is. Thank you so much for replying xxxx

It usually starts at about 1pm. He's more than welcome to bring a partner or friend if her like to too!
I don't know where I'd be without the people I've met through the group, they're incredible people. In fact I met up with two of them this afternoon at my friend's house for lunch and a chat!
If you or he is on Facebook, we have a group so that we can keep in touch too.
It's no problem, it's what we're here for! Xx

Thank you and I am down in Bristol that weekend so I may be able to drag him along - strength in numbers! I work with brain tumour patients and run a support group in Leeds, and absolutely understand their value. Thank you so much - hope to meet you soon xxxx
