Relapse! After stopping steriods

Hi all,

I have been on steriods for my Crohns for the last 3-4 months and just after Christmas started a new medication 'azathioprine 2 x 50mg a day'. Over the past 4 weeks I have slowly stopped the budesonide and in 2 days of completely stopping budesonide I have started feeling pretty awful again. I am surprised that a relapse can happen so fast? Still learning a lot about Crohns and how it affects me.

azathioprine can take up to 4 months to start working so it's not surprising you flared after stopping steroids. Talk to your doctor and they will likely say to stay on a low dose for a bit longer.

relapsing during low dose treatment, at the end of, or shortly few weeks after stopping prednisone is quite common unfortunately. Imuran should start kicking soon within the next weeks hopefully, but can take more time... always best to inform your nurse or GI of this situation.
