Hi,

Rheumatoid arthritis?

Have been suffering more and more with joint pains last year or so and weird lumps on my bones! Knee that swelled up and has left a weird lump in from of my kneecap also! Have shortness of breath (even though quite fit) and chest tightness .... as a result had a chest xray, mri, lung test but all ok. My doc suggested Rheumatoid arthritis. But why would it cause breathing / neck tightness issues?

Anyone else had the same / Rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis, much appreciated.

Both my daughters and my husband have Ankylosing Spondylitis. My younger daughter also has IBD. Spondyloarthropathies (Ankylosing Spondylitis is one of them) are often associated with IBD.

Chest tightness could be caused by costonchondritis, which is inflammation where ribs meet the sternum. It can be caused spondyloarthritis. Both my girls have had a lot of rib pain and trouble taking deep breaths. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot we can do, besides using heat and ice. My younger daughter has been allowed by her GI to take NSAIDs, since the AS is so much worse than the IBD but for many people with IBD that is not an option. Both my girls also have knee involvement.

CCFA has a good summary of the various types of arthritis associated with IBD: http://www.ccfa.org/assets/pdfs/arthritiscomplications.pdf

Seeing a rheumatologist is a great idea.

Hello-

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's within 5 years of each other.

I've been told that it is common for people to suffer from more than one autoimmune disease.

The good news is that Humira and Remicade work for both conditions.
Sorry to hear!
