Stoma rash help

Today I had my first leak around the stoma. I did great for three weeks with zero problems. It started to itch in the morning but I could not get to change the appliance till the late afternoon and my skin around the stoma is irritated, red with little small bumps and at one spot oozing. I replaced the appliance.

What can I do to help the skin to heal?

Hey Dan,
Sorry to hear that. I would say stoma powder and barrier wipe on top. Hopefully that will let it heal in a few days.

I agree CDDad with the stoma powered. Just clean the site with water and then put on stoma powered and then some sort of spray prep. I normally with use this for two changes or till the rash is gone. Wish you the best with this siutation.

ugh i hate it when that happens... it can start a visious circle where the bit that oozes won't adhere to the appliance so it leaks again etc...

you could try what Joe suggests - that powder is really good, dab a bit on with your finger and gently blow the excess away.... or if you have any big flat flanges that adhere really well, try using one of those under your appliance until the next change.

luckily, if you can get the appliance to stick, the skin around the stoma does tend to heal up pretty quickly.

Thank you guys - What is the stoma powder? I have the Convatec Stomadhesive? and the 3M Cavilion No Stinghe shower wipe
So after I shower and pat dry the skin I should apply the powder and the skin barrier, ring, appliance?

Stoma powder normally comes in a small bottle and you can either order it or get it at your local ostomy location.

Once you dry the area apply the powder in the area of the rash. After you have the rash covered spray the whole area with stomadhesive - then apply the wafer. Next time you do a change of the wafer check the site, if the rash is still there, use the powder again.

The powder will allow the area of the rash to dry and heal.

Since you already have the barrier wipes, they can do a similar job as the spray Semi mentioned. I noticed when I use the barrier wipe, the liquid barrier runs right off the little sponge applicator as soon as you gently touch it to the skin. So you should be able to get it on without disturbing the powder too much.

Just let the the barrier dry for a minute or so.

Thanks guys : what is the brand for the spray? I would like to have it just in case the sponge doe not work and it wipes the powder.

I use the holister spray. Amazing how well it works, it is like superglue for wafers - you need to use adhesive remover to get it off.

I had to start writting the day I put the device on, so I can remember when I need to replace the item, LOL How sad is this????
