Hiya everyone, I will be soon stopping the Aza for the second time, first time was because of neutropenia (200mg dose) and this time because constant headaches, fatigue and a bit of a grumpy tum (125mg dose). My GI has decided to try me on 6mp so I am just waiting for a script to be sorted. Keeping fingers crossed this will sort things for me and not give me any issues, really sucks about the renewal of weekly blood tests though.

Good luck with the 6mp AB, Aza gave me terrible headaches too.. Not to mention the nausea and fatigue.. I'm hearing you about the bloods, makes ya feel like pin cushion some days.. :voodoo:

Thanks hun, really hope this will sort things out. Also funny that you mention nausea, I have been experiencing this quite a lot recently as well especially after I have had my lunch and Aza dose, never saw the relation between the two until now :ybatty:

Good luck AB!

I hope the 6MP doesn't give you the same side effects that AZA did. :( I know many on here take their AZA at bedtime to overcome the nausea issue so that may be something to keep in mind with the 6MP too.

Also is symptoms seem to be related to the dose there is the option to add Allopurinol as this then reduces the dose to half or three quarters of the original. So 100mg becomes 25mg.

Hi Angrybird
My GI doc wants to start me on aza after my resection but I mentioned to his that my mum had neutropenia with aza & was taken off it so he suggested 6mp instead. When I saw the surgeon he said they had had discussed aza only.
I have terrible migraines so I am a bit worried about starting this drug but Is one as bad/good as the other?
What did they tell you regarding the difference in side effects?
Sorry to be a pain in asking but I have been trying to find out more about these drugs but there seems very little difference In what I read.

Hiya, the nurse told me that when it breaks down in the body the Aza turns into 6mp but has 'something' extra and it is this part that people tend to react to, she didn't mention what this extra thing consists of though. I am due to see her in clinic in 2 weeks so am going to ask her for a lot more detail then.

Hi
Thanks for replying. We had such a scare all those years ago with my mum & the neutropenia that it worries me a liitle although I am talking around 23 years ago now- Gowd that makes me feel old.
My mum got crohns at 17 years old & she is nearly 58 now so I suppose things were a lot different way back then.

 Hi AB! So sorry about AZA causing you so many issues. Isn't amazing how we are either fighting the disease, fighting the drug side effects, and/or a combo of both? Yikes. Well, here's hoping that 6MP will treat you much better--good luck and keep us posted! :luigi::cat: Snap

Fingers crossed for you AB :) If you really want to throw the doctor for a loop, ask them if they will monitor your 6-TGN level this time around. :)

*hugs*

Thanks guys :)

David - I will definetly make a note of this. I should think your doc does some pretty heavy reading when he knows your coming in so he can at least try and pretend he knows more than you do
