So my boyfriend finally got an appointment with a GI yet saw the practitioner instead cause the GI is based 20 min away and apparently everyone thinks that that's far for some reason so he never saw the actual GI. Anyway, the practitioner doesn't think his abdominal pain is from his gallbladder and will at least do an endoscopy, colonoscopy, blood work and poo tests. That's all fine and dandy until he tells me that the practitioner told him to take probiotics that are supposed to help with IBS and UC, a trial pack, so he can buy more when he runs out... No honey, we don't want your crap. Especially when he doesn't even have a diagnosis for either of those. On top of that, she wants him to INCREASE his fiber when he has extreme diarrhea on a daily basis. An increase in fiber can sometimes help people who have mild diarrhea but not Niagara Falls!

He's getting the blood work done tomorrow along with his poo kit and his scopes will be done in Feb. and the follow up appointment in March with HOPEFULLY the GI and not the practitioner will go over the results and then go from there.

I wish I had been able to go with him to his appointment so I knew what had been said/left out of the conversation. I'll be at his follow up appointment for sure.

From what he told me was that the appointment was like calling in tech support when your computer isn't working. "Well is it plugged in?" She told him to stop having dairy products for a few days to check for lactose intolerance. We haven't even had dairy in a few days cause I'M lactose intolerant. She could have just asked him if he was lactose intolerant cause most people know or should know at least. Not to mention that a little milk doesn't make you bleed out of your ass for a week.

Ok, I'm done venting, for the moment. :p

I'm not sure what the rules are, but is it possible to request the actual doc instead of the practitioner? I don't get how this practitioner replacement stuff is legal (not your situation but the situation in general). I'm always suspicious of an insurance scam at the very least.

And fiber? If I'd increased my fiber due to some nitwit's suggestion I'd be in the hospital. Yeesh.

I think you need to go with him next time and introduce everyone to the Crabby side of your Relish. Ha!

OK... that's it... me and Dusty are going to open up a "Gut Problem Only" clinic and EVERYONE can come see us from now on.... We may not have all the answers (or even half of them) but at least we are smart enough (I HOPE) not to say such stupid sh*t as some of the "professionals" you poor people are dealing with!! I can't believe me "peers" are behaving like this... what an embarrassment to the profession.....

*Silver shakes her head and mumbles in disgust*

I hope he gets to talk to a REAL health care professional soon..... ((((((( Crabby and B/F ))))))))

Your are your own best advocate...

You can do this, too...

I traveled 50+ miles one way to see a competent GI specialist. I never regretted the miles and hours. Needed to scope out bathrooms along the way before hand.

I "dismissed" those professionals that were unable to demonstrate substantive experience with Crohn's disease. I have argued with Doctors that refused to listen or provide answers.

I have been counseled by "research hospital doctors" each asserting that "YOU" are the expert on your condition. You must drive to get the results you want. (NIH, Bethesda MD, National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda MD, Medical College of Virginia, Richmond VA; Baylor Medical Center, Dallas TX)

You are empowered to demand competent services. Practitioners should not be in control of your disease. Interview the service provider. Interview several. Seek the opinions of people in your local area about competent medical services.

Sorry so direct. But I suffered greatly before I learned that I could call the shots (both figuratively and literally.) :ysmile:

Perhaps someone can "point to" competent medical services based on your geography. However, this my not be an activity that is in the interest of our forum hosts - and rightly so - liability is an issue.

Your mileage may vary - but I think you get to make choices in many instances.

Best wishes!

Yes, we do tend to forget that WE ARE IN CONTROL..... However, this only works if you KNOW what you want and how to get it.... I am not an advocate of "doctor shopping" on a regular basis.... it helps to have one who can follow you through the progression of your health to better understand how to help you..... HOWEVER.... sometimes it IS necessary - especially when the professional (doctor, RN, NP, whoever) you are dealing with at the time is a twit.....
