I'm on prednisolone foam enemas and i am currently using KY Jelly to grease the tubing bit as recommended by the pharmacist. I'm just wondering if there's anything a bit more natural that could be used instead, and maybe which makes it more comfortable to insert?

Ive already used coconut oil because Im always looking for natural options. However, this is just my opinion, but I would not use food oils during a flare. KY seems more neutral to me. This is what I am using right now for my suppositaries even if I am not in a flare.

My husband used KY gel and it helped him. I'm Indian and we usually use coconut oil even if there is normal burning in the anal area or after a hard BM. We always feel it's safe. Everyone differs though :)

Thanks for the replies. Does the coconut oil have to be used within a month of opening, I wonder, same as for eating, or doesn't it matter so much at the other end? Reason I ask is because it's very expensive and only seems to be sold in large jars where I live!

I used Boots own brand lubricant. I don't think it's a 'natural' product but it's certainly a lot cheaper than KY and very, very lubricating.

Coconut oil have extremely long shelf life. For me, its just I am not comfortable inserting undigested food in my rectum. Im too worried about disrupting my gut flora which I have been working hard for! I may be paranoiac and completely off, but that belongs to me lol. I would not have a problem using it outside the rectum, on skin as Aarti says, but inside is different for me.

As Lady Organic says, coconut oil has very long shelf life. It is not too costly. You can find smaller bottles in Indian stores (I am not sure where you live). We use Parachute brand coconut oil.

Thanks. I know coconut oil does have a long shelf life (ie unopened) but my issue is whether it goes off soon after opening. The last jar I bought (for cooking, didn't realise it had other uses) said to use within a very few weeks of opening, can't remember precisely how many, and I had to throw most of the jar away unused. As to whether putting foodstuff up your bottom is more or less healthy than putting petrochemicals up there, I reckon it's probably a close-run thing! I'll try looking in local Indian stores for smaller quantities than Holland and Barratt.

coconut oil lasts for months even if opened! I buy organic coconut oils and never had a problem keeping them real long time, same great taste. coconut milk or water is different and expires very fast. little jars are sold in health food stores.
