My 13yr old daughter just started on this med Thurs. She is taking 500mg 3 times a day. Today she was playing with an outdoor kitty and experienced an allergic reaction after touching her. Her mouth, eyes and skin were all itchy. She has never had a reaction to an animal like this before. Could the meds have caused this? She is also on folic acid and iron.

Thanks

Hi Jen - Check with your doc, but that seems weird. Allergies can crop up and go away randomly. My mom was allergic to shellfish for 20 years, then it went away! I used to have horrible seasonal allergies, and now I don't. Weird.

Google for the side efffects of sulfasalazine and see if anything comes up.

I was on it daily for 8 years and never had a side effect. It's generally well tolerated.

Hiya Jen

some people are allergic to the sulpha in it. Other alternatives, part of the 5ASA family are Pentasa and Asacol, mesalazine is the main ingredient. They are sulpha free.
have a word with the doc and ask for a swap.

Hi Jen,
I was started on Sulfasalazine only to be taken off
due to being allergic to the sulfa.
Now on Asacol which is close to the Sulfasalazine
without the Sulfa.
