So, somebody passed along some info to me about superoxide dismutase as a supplement that could possibly benefit Crohn's disease (as an enteric-coated SOD complex pill). I did a quick search of the forum and didn't find anything; another quick Google search didn't really seem to turn up much either. Anyone here have any experiences with SOD complex? (Even if you haven't had any first-hand experiences with it, perhaps the more scientifically-inclined among us might be able to explain it a bit?) Thought I'd throw it out there in case it sounded interesting to anyone.

Hi JDTM,
SOD (superoxide dismutase) is an enzyme that is common to many cells, between many different plants, animals, even bacteria.

SOD takes free radicals which are very destructive to DNA and protein and the enzyme will catalyze a reaction that finally makes oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Although the hydrogen peroxide is less harmful than the free radical, and hydrogen peroxide is unstable and will eventually break down, it still has the ability to do damage to your cells.

Rather than SOD, may I suggest a supplement that acts further up the pathway and reduces the liberation of free radicals in general? Docosahexaenoate (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are omega 3 fatty acids that also are shown to decrease inflammatory response by competing out the arachadonic acid pro-inflammation pathway, has a neuroprotective role, reduces blood pressure and risk of heart disease, helps with reducing some side effects of (harsher type) antibiotics, they even can reduce TNF-alpha and NFkB activation(seen in overactive immune response of Crohn's).

Omega 3 fatty acids = good
:)

Cool! So if I'm taking fish oil supps that contain EPA and DHA, SOD would be kind of redundant, correct?

I checked my brand online, it does list them both. No amount for each one specifically, but out of a 1000 mg softgel it says total omega 3 fatty-acids is 300 mg
