Hi,

I've been ill at least 6 years, diagnosed for 3 years and for the past 4 months have been really ill with it. After seeing GPs and my Consultant and finally having an MRI scan that revealed a stricture. I saw my Consultant today to discuss the results and surgery it is!

They have reviewed my MRI as a group of Consultants and they do not think there is any underlying inflammation, therefore the only option is to remove the stricture. They said it is too large to do the camera and balloon option. The surgeon will be in contact shortly to discuss the resection. My Consultant said it would be down to the Surgeon to decide whether it will be full surgery or keyhole, but he's unsure about keyhole because of the size of the stricture.

Has anyone else had a resection? How long are you in hospital? What's the recovery time?

Thanks in advance :)

Everyone responds differently but generally a resection would be 3-5 days in the hospital and 6-8 weeks for recovery. It really depends on the amount cut and whether it's open or keyhole but that's a general timeframe.

I was supposed to have the keyhole surgery when they thought I only had 15 cm of small intestine to remove. After X-ray, my surgery plan was changed to full open and the removed 50 cm, the reason being that the section of intestine was too large to remove doing the keyhole procedure. I was in the hospital 5 days after my surgery. :)

YJ120,
I had my resection in 2012, and left the hospital on the 5th day. One of the main requirements for my discharge was that I have a BM before leaving.
