I went to the Doctor today and had quite a few big topics come up. One of them was the suggestion of seeing a surgeon and considering a surgery in the near future. I have quite a few concerns but the main one is wondering if it will help. I guess I am asking for any of you guys that have had surgery to just share your experience with me. I hope everyone is doing well and hope you all the best :)

I think it would be a good idea...if i can get it to go away long enough for me to start my life (finish school, get my own place, etc.) then it would be worth a small scar. I don't smoke so that would probably help me some. My doctor said that my disease is scattered but the worst part is the lower right quadrant for two reasons...1. my pain started there so its safe to say that thats where my disease could have started. 2. He says i may have scarring that is keeping me from healing properly as well as causing most of my pain. Thanks for the response!

I haven't had internal surgery, but I would want to try all other options before I had it. I did have surgery for a perianal fistula, and it was a REALLY terrible and painful recovery.
I guess my question would be what have you done besides surgery, and what else can you try?
I went to the dr today for a non-Crohn's problem, and she gave me 3 options. Surgery and 2 others. I am going to try the 2 others to see if I can resolve it first without surgery. Who would elect major surgery??
On the other hand, some people have surgery and then have years of remission. What area/what kind of surgery is it?

(I think I didn't just help one bit.)

edit - oops. Posted this before I saw your response to Pen.

Brandon, go thruogh with it. Ive been through 7 total mostly because i didnt follow advice, or couldnt get my prescriptions. Ive had a colostomy 3 times, the first time was in my freshmen year !!!, and they say the next time is permenent. Take care of yourself, follow your doctor hand, and foot. After you recover from the surjury you wont even know you have a problem. Youll feel great for years.

I have had surgery three times and would do it all over again if I had the chance. The only reason that I haven't had the forth is because my kids are small and the Humira is working for now. I say do it, talk to the surgeon and get your life back. Good luck with whatever decision you decide. Oh and I have a big scar but even so I recovered very quickly each time. They always used the same incision with all my surgeries. The best advice is when they tell you to get up and walk after surgery do it. The sooner you walk, the quicker your bowels wake up and the faster you get out of the hospital.

Because you have the disease spread in other parts beyond where they're going to remove you will still be sick after the surgery. There's no remission for you. How sick you'll be I can't say though. I doubt your doctor could either.

I did, and you can help one problem just to have another problem. Me surgery didnt help much. They took a foot of my intestine (colon, part where small connects to large). I havnt notice pain going away but now I have a lot of of bathroom issues. I now go and it hurts alot and im in pain almost all the time and I have to restrict what i eat. You need to have surgery because down the road you will eventually so i go mine in late march 08.
I just hurt still but only thing new is going to bathroom and having issues with that. Good luck on figuring out what to do! I do everything in the book and I still hurt.

My consultant rang me yesterday saying he's arranged for me to be admitted to the hospital in the next few weeks to get surgery.

A lot of you in here have probably had it, their cutting the bowel and giving me a colostomy bag for a period of time to let the bowel heal and hopefully heal the fistulea that I have. Then they will reconnect the bowel.

I actually don't know anything about this procedure as it's being arranged by the GI doc against normal procedures. I'll only get to talk to the surgeon when I get admitted.

The only thing I know is that it's keyhole surgery.

Does anyone know what the recovery time is and how long I'll be off work?
