I am soooooooo scared. I have my surgery tomorrow. They are making temp stoma for me, don't know yet is it going to be ileostomy or colostomy. If my colon is inflammed for the longer than just rectum then they are making ileostomy.

I am so scared. Here it's 9.30pm and my surgery is 9.30am. I don't think i am going to sleep tonight at all.. I haven't even packed my bag yet! I have just been reading you stoma surgery stories here the WHOLE day. Very helpful though!

I am just so scared about the surgery, the pain and stuff. Not so much the stoma itself. I think (hope) i can handle the stoma. But i hate nausea and i am so scared that i get blockage or nausea of the pain meds.

Any last words of wisdom??

Hi Jimena

Can't see anything wrong with your English! I hope your surgery goes well. Not everybody gets nausea so let's hope you're one of the majority who doesn't. If you do get it then it is not very pleasant but it will pass and at least you will know why you've got it.

Like you I was scared of surgery but once you get into the hospital environment you should find you become more relaxed. The anticipation is worse than the reality. I had the ileostomy operation and felt very little pain. I chose to have an epidural and after that came out it was just paracetamol for a few days. If you do have any pain tell one of the doctors or nurses as they will be able to help.

This may sound strange but really I look forward to the feeling you get when the anaesthetist gives "something to relax you" as they prepare you for the operation. At that point you know that there is nothing left for you to do, you are completely in the hands of the professionals (and fate) and when you wake up in Recovery it will be over and you can concentrate on getting strong again.

Keep posting to let us know how you are getting on and once again - good luck. Nigel

You will be in good hands and I'm sure they will fill you with lots of pain medicine to make you comfortable. I think this anticipation is sometimes the worst but when you wake up you may find its not as bad as you feared. I'm hoping for a successful surgery for you.

The presurgery suffering really gives you extra strength you may of even not realize you had. This strength will guide you through it. As I am sure you are aware of they usually medicate you for the surgery so much it will be like you fell asleep and woke up. They have all sort of drugs to help you to feel no pain. I think the decision process is the scary part which you can put behind you after the surgery. This is were faith is needed in the doctors are doing the right thing and you have exhausted other efforts for you which it sounds like you have as you are going forward. It will be really sick and in humane if they aren't! It is still your choice and your body except when you are under then it is up to the professionals. I wish you the best you beautiful young lady and don't be afraid to ask questions!!! This will pass...

My heart goes out to you for tomorrow. Maybe this will be the best thing you can do. I just want you to know I care and while I don't post here often, I intend to. Just got out of hospital again today (6 stays in less than 1 year)

All the best Jimena. I hope everything went smoothly and they are giving you lots of pain meds and anti nausea meds. Drop us a line to let us know how everything went.

Thanks guys, it really means a lot to me!

Surgery went well, haven't seen the surgeon yet but his coming today to see me and tell me what did they do. I have a colostomy now! Last night i was in pain but i did get meds that help take the edge off. I don't like to sleep on my back so that annoying too :D

i let you know more after the surgeon tells me what have they done.

but, i am alive!!!! :)

It's good to hear the surgery went well! I hope you have a great recovery and this surgery helps you in the long run! Time for a new chapter in life.

Thanks!

I wanted to ask how long does it take that stoma start working, i mean colostomy? I havent pass even gas yet. I havent moveba lot yet coz been so dizzy everytime i stand up.

Great to hear it went OK. I wouldn't worry that the stoma is not working yet. The dizziness is quite normal for a couple of days after the op. Keep posting how you are getting on

Hi there,
I am glad to hear you are over surgery ,and hope all goes well for you now. It can not be easy, but I pray you feel better soon. Best wishes.
:getwell::bigwave:

Hey again! I tjink my pain meds make me feel very dizzy. I take one at the morning and i am useless until midday about 4-5pm then i can sit up and walk a little. Then i take my pain med in the evening and sleep like a baby :D i was sitting up just about 15minutes and it feels good. Only pain is on the right side of the wound. I think they must be searching that inflammation on my TI and that's why i have pain there. I really hope my stoma starts gasing soon! I have never ever waited a fart this much :D i have just eat strawberrysoup and some dessert they have here. Not much coz stoma don't work yet. Tomorrow is a shower day and i am scared of that!!!

A shower seems intimidating right now, but you will feel glorious after you have one! Big hugs!!!!

Great to hear everything so far is going well! You seem like you are in really good spirits, keep up the great attitude! Shower might seem intimidating but I bet you will feel very refreshed and rejuvenated afterwards!

Caught this thread to late to wish you well on surgery day. I am glad your surgery went well. Give yourself time to heal and get used to everything. Good Luck!

Thank youuuu, it means a lot!!

Guess whyt!!? My stoma started burbing today, jiiiiihaaaaa, never been so happy about the farts lol :D

Hi Jimena,
Glad to hear all went well. It's nearly a year since I had mine done and I can say that it gets easier everyday. In a years time you will wonder how you ever managed with out it.

Thanks Jaano! Today i showered without my bag ans stoma was so ugly that i get some panick attacks, but then nurse did change thw bag and stuff and when she cleaned my stoma, it was not so ugly. It look like a baby pigs nose :D made me kind of laugh actually.

havent pooped yet though. Grrr... just drink little bit prune juice if it gets things going. Air coming out nicely which is good thing!

If i start to poop i get to go home tomorrow!

Finally my stoma has start working! :) now question, when you change just the bsg, do you clean out your stoma? My pooo is thick and i can't empty my bag si i need to change the whole bag (i use two pieces). Now i just wonder if i clean the stoma or just insert a new bag? I use bags that has "sticker" type of attachment.. if you know what i mean. So the ring around my stoma shouldn't get wet because the bag won't stick to it if it's wet...

soon it is time for my first bag change with poop in it :D

by the way, i get to go home yesterday, yay!!!

So glad everything went well and that you are now going home. I have an ileostomy and use a one piece so when I change the bag (usually everyday but I'm getting brave and leaving it for two now) I clean all around the stoma with warm water. I just wipe any poop off the stoma with toilet paper then gently wipe all around with a chux wipe and warm water. I let the skin dry (a hairdryer used carefully helps) then apply a barrier wipe and then the new bag.
I'm not sure about what you do with a two piece. I think it is important to clean any poop from your skin as it can cause irritation but the rest is up to you, whether you find it yucky or not. Personally if it wasn't on my skin and was going to be covered by the bag I wouldn't worry too much - it may get messier trying to clean it up if your poops are sticky. :)
I'm sure someone else here who uses the same system as you will will be able to help.

I absolutely love your description of your stoma - a baby pigs nose is perfect - and kind of cute! So good that you are laughing about it - definitely the right attitude.

 anna

Hi all and thanks for your replys! That hair dryer tip was great, and i have been using that to dry eberything before i but my wafer on.

I have little proplems with my stoma, irritation around it. Now it's 4 weeks from surgery and i started using Coloplast Sensura light convex. I just send pictures my poor stoma to my stoma nurse and she wants to see me tomorrow. She thinks that the "hard" convex is not a good choice for me now coz my my skin is so irritated.

There is picture what i have posted in instagram, i don't know if you can see it?

My skin is very hard around my stoma, and purple too! Is it normal?!

Everything else has been great, my bum is soooo much better now when it's not in use :D And my stoma works great and it doesn't make me gag anymore when i change my pouch :D

I am a little sad today coz i was going to go for a little walk at the beach with my dog but didn't get even 100m out of the door coz the pain arund my stoma was so hard :(
