DD had surgery last night and it went well! It took about two hours and she came out with no drains, bags or tubes! She does have a catheter but that should come out today. Her PICC line will stay to give her pain meds and TPN until she's able to eat more. They were able to do most of it laproscopically so she has two small cuts and one cut that's about an inch (it's down low so if she ever wants to wear a bikini no one will see it LOL). They didn't see any abscesses but the small bowel had started to form a U shape and kind of bend back on itself. It looked like there may have been two fistulas starting but that part was taken out. All in all she had about 12 inches of small bowel taken out. She'll walk this afternoon and start small sips of water and maybe apple juice...maybe even some bites of jello tonight! I couldn't be more happy with the outcome.

Thank you all SO MUCH for listening, caring and helping me through this. As I've said before, I hate that any child has to go through this but I'm so thankful to have all of you. You're all the perfect combination of concern, knowledge and support!

SO glad it went well and she avoided a bag!! Hope her recovery is quick and uneventful! Keep us updated, when you can :ghug:.

Wonderful news! You are such an amazing mom. Positive, encouraging and brave! Your girl is lucky to have you and I am sure your attitude has a lot to do with how well she is doing.

Completely agree!! Such wonderful news this turned out so well and great job shepherding her through this nightmare.

I hope she has a few good days, gets home quickly, and can get back to a good life ASAP!

Happy new year.

Thank you all SO much! I can't tell you how wonderful that makes me feel because every day in these past 2 months I wonder if I'm missing something, if I'm doing enough or asking enough questions. It means so much to hear it from moms who have been there.

She's walked twice today and they took out her catheter but now she feels like she has to pee and can't. I remember that happening to DS after his surgery so hopefully she'll go soon. She hasn't wanted to drink anything yet. They gave her the ok for clear liquids but I think she's just nervous about drinking/eating because it's been weeks since she's had FOOD.

So glad the surgery went well! And hoping for a speedy and uneventful recovery for her! :ghug:

My son had the similar problem after his surgery. Anesthesia and pain meds seem to immobilize his bladder. He had to have the catheter reinserted and he was so angry about it. He had begged them not to take it out because he knew he would have that problem from past experience. They gave him 8 hours then had to reinsert.

I remember one of the nurses saying for most the bladder does wake up before a recath is needed. I hope that's the case for your DD.

She had a bad night. Very difficult to urinate and not much came out. She was up every hour walking to the bathroom and then feeling like she had to go. They are doing a bladder scan to see how full her bladder is now then they may have to do a straight catheter just to drain her bladder. It's heartbreaking. Through all of this she has been pretty upbeat for the most part. Now she's crying and moaning while she tries to pee saying she hates her life and this isn't fair.

Your poor, poor girl. I wish all this was easier. We're all thinking of her, and hoping she can manage without a catheter.

I didn't realize your son had surgery too - you really are a super Mom!

Sending BIG hugs!! Keeping our fingers and toes crossed for her :ghug:.

They did a bladder scan on my son as well after he was unable to go. It determined that he needed to be recathed.

Because my son was so out of sorts about having the cath reinserted I asked that he be given IV ativan for the procedure. It really helped. You may want to ask for it if they do have to cath again.

I'm so sorry. :( It is so frustrating and completely unfair that our kids have to deal with so much. I hope things improve through the day. :ghug:

Thank you all for the support. She's still having some pain while urinating but she's found that holding a pillow to her tummy helps to push it out. She's been moved up to full liquid diet so she was happy to eat a few yogurts tonight. She's walked a lot today and was able to pass gas once but still no bowel movement. I'm hoping she'll be able to tomorrow because it's been two days since surgery. She doesn't have any fever and she doesn't look bloated but I think I'll just breathe easier once she does!

Very glad to hear she is doing better! The bladder things is not unusual at all after surgery of this type. Hopefully eating a little dairy will help her form some stool so she can have a BM. It is hard to poop when you have nothing in you. Fingers crossed for her!

DS did the pillow on the tummy thing too and it helped. He never needed to be recathed, but if I remember correctly, they didn't even take the thing out for two days. One nurse asked why he still had it and then proceeded to take it out.

Does your hospital have therapy dogs or other similar programs? When DS hit the wall, having a therapy dog visit for 15 minutes completely changed his attitude, lifted his spirits, and... made him poop! It was almost as if the stress of everything was also hindering his BMs. Once he let go of some of the stress, we got a BM. Could have been a total coincidence too, but worth a try anyway.
