Hi - I was on 30mg of pred, dropped to 25 after 1 week then down to 20. Things got worse so I went back up to 25 and then back to 30mg.

My consultant then switched me to budesonide 3mg three times a day (9mg daily dose).

Well the pred was sort of holding the flare up in that frequency of D was lower and pain was pretty much under control.

Since swapping yesterday my symptoms are much much worse and the frequency of D has increased much more.:ymad:

Is this to be expected during changeover ?

Is budesonide good stuff ?

I have only ever been on pred before so have no experience of this stuff.

Also what side effects can i expect ?

How long would it take to work - i.e when do i worry that it is not working ?

I am seeing the consultant on Thursday so I am hoping he can sort things out more but the frequency of D is annoying me - the pred had it sorted pretty much during the day.

He changed the meds after a colonoscopy.

Thanks

Clare

Hi Clare,

Budesonide is a steroid just like pred. The difference is pred works systemically as in throughout your body. Budesonide is designed to release in the gut so targets the specific problem area. As a result smaller doses are needed to hit the target area tissues.

You could well be experiencing the effects due to losing the systemic stronger action of the pred. Just thinking out loud here...

Tell your cons when you see them they may be able to increase the dose although I think 12mg daily is the top. Could be very wrong on that however.

As to time span working I am unsure if it is days or longer to take effect sorry.

Thinking of you and hope you get some relief soon.

I have been on and off pred for a long time and I have also made the switch. I like entocort better. When I switched I started feeling better after a few days. I would stay on entocort at 9mg for about a month and then I would start getting symptoms again, the D to be exact. My GI would tell me to switch back on pred because Entocort is weaker.

I do like entocort, and I don't notice any side effects when I'm on it. I'm also starting to think that after a month when I start getting D again that I might just be going through withdrawals from pred. and maybe it's not a flare.

Entocort was one of the first meds that I was put on before pred. It did not work for me, but maybe it may just take time for it to work for you.
hope you feel better
