Hello everyone. What are the symptom's of dehydration? What should I look for? how will I know that's the actual problem im having?

Monday I was not feeling very good didn't have my normal amazing appetite. right before I went to bed my bag sprung a leak and these were the new Mio bags that I had on so I changed that one then I woke up about midnight all over my nightshirt and my tummy luckily it did not get on my bed this time. I noticed a lot of green bile and the smell of the bile but Im not having pain of any kind then again at 3:30 this time my bed is wet and my bag is full of green bile. I cleaned up changed my bag changed my bed and felt like crap like I was just drained. I woke up again about 6:30 this time I was not going back to bed I removed the leaky bag which had bile again, could have been diarrhea who knows. I jumped in the shower this time feeling completely drained standing in the shower I was dry heaving but nothing coming up. I still had no pain anywhere from anything just felt like crap. I was not going to work yesterday. I stayed home and did nothing but drink drink drink. As the day went on I rested and felt better it was weird.

How do you manage if you do get diarrhea? or if its a green bile day? that is just gross Sh** Im just saying. How do you keep from running out of bags?

Thanks
Cindy

I never thought I would have to see green bile again once they removed the NG tube that stuff is just nasty.

Hi cleuger, it is quite common to have problems with leaking early on, so don't worry, I'm sure you'll get this sorted out.

You would feel thirsty, your blood pressure might be low, which would cause you to feel lightheaded when you stand up, and you might pee less than normal and your pee may be a darker colour than normal. If you're having diarrhoea, it won't hurt to take in a bit more fluid even if you're not getting these symptoms.

If your bags are leaking now and weren't previously, they're probably not coping with the output now that it's of a larger volume or more watery in consistency. If the volume is a problem, you may want to keep some larger sized bag in stock for times when you have more output, or take to wearing a larger bag at night if that's when the leaks are occurring.

If the bag is not actually overflowing, but the watery output is able to seep out when more solid output wasn't, you would most likely do best to speak to a stoma nurse, but I know you can get mouldable rings which you put around the cut area of the pouch which make a closer seal between the bag and your skin. Personally, I get leaks whenever I don't use a convex bag. I'm still not sure why this works, but with my previous stomas, after having them and managing ok for a few weeks, I started getting leaks, the stoma nurses switched me to a convex bag, and the leaks stopped. With my latest stoma, a similar thing: I'd been managing fine with normal bags and my output had been fairly solid. I started getting watery output, and the bags leaked. I didn't even bother seeing the stoma nurses this time: I just switched to convex bags and have had no leaks since, whether the output is watery or not. You can also get tape to stick around the edge of the bag for an extra bit of protection.

As for the bile and the cause of the diarrhoea, I think you'd be best making an appointment with a doctor - with your surgeon if possible. Hope things settle down soon.

I see her Tuesday it stopped yesterday morning it only was happening over night when I had to keep changing my bag. Ill mention it to her when I see her. Can your bowels go back to sleep after a month pre-op, at first that's what I thought happened. It was weird by about 9 am yesterday it started coming out thick again my stool is Farley thick my nurse told me because I have all my ileum not sure if I spelled that right but she only removed the colon and left all of that I guess. Most of the time my output is thick sometimes could almost push my bag off. That's why I was in shock with the green water. I had a good sleep last night it was like it never happened. Ok I think I may have been on my way to being dehydrated. Thanks for the information.

Hi Cindy.

Its a good idea to see the doctor. Personally I wouldn't be overly worried. I get bile every now and then. It's important to remember you're still vulnerable to regular colds and flu's like everyone else. Things can change if you're fighting something.

See what the doctor says and take it easy when you need too.

BTW, the first stage of dehydration is thirst. As it gets worse urinary output decreases and becomes dark. Once its severe you get nauseated, dizzy, very painful muscle spasms. At this point you should go to the ER for if fluids.

I don't think your bowel would go back to sleep this long after surgery. Do you have stomach pain?
