tests, tests and more tests

Hi everyone,

Well, I have to get a CT scan of the pelvis and abdomin today. I have a colonoscopy scheduled for next week. Had a sigmoidoscopy done in August (doc found an ulcer in the colon, biopsy of the ulcer came back as "abnormal"). Bloodwork came back okay, red cell count was good, white cell count seemed normal. They said they did a Saccharomyces Cerevisiae test and that came back high. I was hoping that the colonoscopy would have been enough to determine whether I have Crohn's or not, but they said a CT scan would be helpful because of the severe abdominal pain I have. How reliable is the Saccharomyces cerevisiae test? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. 30 minutes until I have to start drinking that awful liquid...YIKES!!!

i have never heard of that test in the uk sorry, good luck with the prep.yuk!!! regarsd sharon x

Thanks Sharon! I THINK, but I'm not sure, I think it's the ASCA test. That's what I'm wondering...is it the same thing?

Okay, gotta finish drinking this stuff. Gagging with every sip. Yuk is right! Take care.

It is the same thing...I had the test done from a company call Prometheus but mine didn't help. It is suppose to tell if you have Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis, but is not 100% accurate. If you are showing on it that means you have one or the other diseases. There should be a printout that was sent to your doctor that shows what you tested positive for. For me it showed that I don't have any markers consistent with IBD which totally frustrated my GI.

Thank you Kimberlie and Teeny5! I did the CT scan today. Wasn't as horrible as I anticipated. I wasn't able to finish the drink and dye injection felt weird, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Now, onto the colonoscopy. Oh the life I lead!

Teeny, quick question. My doctor said that my Saccharomyces cerevisiae test came back showing the markers for Crohn's. Is that test the same as an ASCA test or is it different? I know one is Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the one I had is Saccharomyces cerevisiae, I was wondering if they're both the same. I guess I'll get my answers next week...hopefully! Thank you again for the encouragement. Take care.

I thought they were all the same thing, but I could be wrong.

Good luck with your colonoscopy. The prep is the worst part, especially if they knock you out for it. I thought the CT scan wasn't too bad either. I had an upper GI with a small bowel follow through and that wasn't so bad either.

Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies is the same as ASCA. ASCA is just an abbreviation. There is ANOTHER marker they look at too that's more suggestive of UC, but my brain isn't functioning enough this morning yet to remember it.

Hi mrs. vr. I think the other test is pASCA test (to check for UC). The doc said that I came back with the markers for Crohns but he also said that it can give a false positive. Doc better make a decision next week after the colonoscopy, I'm tired of getting it from both ends (pun intended) with no clear decision.

Ah, I'm just cranky today. I had 6 full days of NO pain...then I had to drink that stuff yesterday for the test and that was it. I'm back to square one. Up at 4:00 am with abdominal pain.

Thanks again for your input.

Hi Pen,

Sucks is the word of the day!

Actually, colonoscopy isn't until Thursday (oct. 1). CT Scan was yesterday. Doc called at 9:00 am, CT scan was done at 1:00 pm. Figured I may as well get it over with. What's a scope? What other interesting medical devices do I have to look forward to? If it's bad, don't tell me.

Pen, I had a colonoscopy 6 years ago. Prepped with Golytle. Horrible! This time I'm doing the Murilax with gatorade mixture (Mango flavored!). Hopefully it won't be as bad.

My CT scan came back "unremarkable" and showed nothing wrong. Sigmoidoscopy showed an ulcer in the colon. We'll see what the colonoscopy shows.
