D, thanks for the link.

So those of you supplementing vit. D - do you all supplement K2 as well ?
Is there a valid blood test to check for K2 levels ?

Would love to get any info. about that topic !

I take about 25,000 iu of D3 in the winter. I will be tapering back to around 15,000 or less in the summer.

I also take K2. I think you either need to eat lots of food high in K2 or supplement if you are taking higher doses of D. I also take magnesium which also helps the other two do there job.

I have never heard of a K2 test, but there may be one.

I'd be interested in knowing if there is a K2 test as well. It's something I recently began supplementing in addition to my magnesium. I get plenty of D from the sun.

Thanks for posting the real RDA reminder dbergy :)

Great article, thanks for sharing. My vitamin d level was at 80 a year or so ago and now I'm back in the 30's. Trying to get it back up to where it used to be but it's hard (and I take 5000iu's/day!), especially if you can't go in the sun due to other meds.

I don't have a lot of faith in doctors, but I have to give credit to my retired doc for telling me to up my dose until my D level gets up to where it should be.

Even taking what seems to be a large dose, my last test was at 40. It was at 10 or 15 taking 5,000 iu.

My younger brother, who had the same test had an undetectable level.

I started my son on vitamin D after Dusty posted an article several years ago. As a 110 lb, 15 year old, he takes 2500iu. The only K2 that he gets is from the little bit in his multi though.

He's gone from 37 to 45 to 51 over the course of two years, which I think is quite good considering we're in MN with little sunshine 9 months of the year.

I really wish the RDA issue would be revisited. Our pediatrician is a very "by the book" kind of doctor so he thinks I'm crazy for having DS do 2500iu. Based on his levels though, I think we're doing the right thing.

I talked to my doctor and apprently there is no direct test for vitamin K; when they suspect deficit they run some tests like PT...

So David, how do you determine how much K2 to supplement ?

If you supplement by eating more food with K like spinach, that may be enough. I take a supplement and the recommended doses are generally pretty conservative. I do both.
