The root cause for most of the degenerative diseases that plague mankind today is thought to be chronic inflammation. Doctors and researchers say that if your body is in a constant state of inflammation, the chances of you getting afflicted by chronic diseases, including cancer, are very high. And in today’s stressful times, almost all of us could be heading in that direction.

How do you know if your body is on the path towards inflammation? If, when you fall sick, it turns into serious ailments almost every time, that’s how. Doctors say that your body is said to be inflamed if, for example, when you get a cold, it turns into bronchitis, or you get a sore throat and it turns into tonsillitis. Or if you have constant backache, chances are that you could have chronic inflammation of the joints and muscles and even your digestive system. These are simple examples showing that when your body has no resistance left to fight infections, the way for chronic diseases to take root is paved.

Short-term inflammation is, of course, a good thing, as that is what helps us to fight off bacteria and other harmful pathogens. The problem starts when your body is in a constant state of inflammation. Many herbs can work on inflammation in a multi-faceted holistic and balanced way without the side effects of drugs. Some of these spices are turmeric, ginger, garlic, parsley, rosemary, oregano, cinnamon, cardamom, cilantro, black pepper and basil amongst many others.

Adrak (ginger) has active compounds of gingerols, zingibain, bisabolenel, oleoresins and zingiberole and has anti-inflammatory properties which not only help improve muscle and joint pain, but also help to fight cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis and cancer. It is often used to detoxify the body, stimulate circulation, and ease bronchitis and congestion, aid digestion and reduce flatulence.

Haldi (turmeric) contains compounds called curcuminoids, which help to fight inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory properties, in fact, have been compared to drugs like hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone. It is a strong tool against conditions like arthritis, cancer, joint inflammation, Alzheimer’s, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, cystic fibrosis and cardiovascular ailments. Turmeric is used to heal wounds, in liver detoxification and for skin problems.

Dalchini (cinnamon), contains eugenol (used in pain relief) and cinnamaldehyde (which has sedative properties), is known to be a powerful antioxidant with anti-clotting and anti-inflammatory properties, and may even be able to help improve brain function.

Elaichi (cardamom) contains potent antioxidants, and is sometimes used in liver detoxification. It is also used to counteract ailments like acidity, nausea, flatulence, bloating, asthma, chronic bronchitis, anorexia, and even to treat gum, teeth, and throat infections. It may be used to break up kidney and gall bladder stones. The Chinese use it to treat urinary incontinence.

Ingredients: Fresh almond milk 2 cups (or any other non dairy milk of your choice), 1 tsp fresh grated ginger, 1 tsp organic haldi powder, ¼ tsp fresh ground organic cinnamon powder,¼ tsp fresh organic cardamom powder, 1 tsp palm sugar or sweetener of your choice.

Method: In a heavy bottomed pan, heat the almond milk. Stir in the spices gently, making sure the milk does not boil over. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Drink up and sleep well. You can also have this drink at the start of the day instead of at night. Whichever time you choose, it’s a great way to start or end your day.

HDL and large buoyant LDL are now recognised as good, and small dense LDL are your body's (inadequate) response to sugar/carbohydrates -the LDL take cholesterol to plaques (lesions) in your blood vessels[1], lessions due to inflammation from sugar/carbs/trans fats.

Tests in the fifties initially showed an association between early death by heart disease and fat deposits and lesions along artery walls. Because cholesterol was found to be present in those deposits (of course it would!) and because researchers had previously associated familial hypercholesterolaemia (hereditary high blood cholesterol) with heart disease, they concluded that cholesterol must be the culprit. In fact, what happens is that in response to an inflammatory situation, the body uses cholesterol as a “band-aid” to temporarily cover any lesions in the arterial wall. In the event the inflammation is resolved, the band-aid goes away and repair takes place. No harm, no foul. Unfortunately, in most cases, the inflammation proceeds, the cholesterol plaque is eventually acted on by macrophages and is oxidized to a point at which it takes up more space in the artery, slows arterial flow and eventually can break loose to form a clot. And all this time the cholesterol was just trying to be the good guy! Blaming cholesterol for all this is like blaming a cut finger on all the band-aids you have lying around your house.
