I've watched my two older brothers suffer from Chrohn's all their life. I thought I got lucky and escaped their fate. I'm a healthy, marathon runner in my early 50's. On 12-30-2010, after ignoring my symptoms for weeks (thought it was a stomach bug I'd get over), my friend talked me into going to a dr. I'd been so healthy, I didn't even have a regular doctor, so went to a clinic. She did a cat scan, thinking I'd be having an appendectomy that evening. Instead it turned out to be suspected Chrohn's. I was sent to UW Medical Center for 2nd opinion. They confirmed it. I started on a small (25mg) dose of 6mp on 4-22-2011, and have titrated up to 75mg by May 27th. I'm an intermediate metabolizer, so I'm "iffy" if I'll be able to succeed in taking it. I've had a few, discrete, weird events, with general fatigue and a little bit of nausea, but think I'm managing. We shall see! Would be nice if the abdominal pain from this initial flare would fully go away, but trying to be patient waiting.

Welcome Grace! I guess we're never out of the woods, eh? Are your brothers' crohns mostly manageable? I hope 6mp keeps you in check and gets you back out there running!

Hi Grace and welcome :)

I hope the medication works for you, in the meantime take it easy :)

Great name by the way, it's what I named my daughter :)

Hi Grace :)

Glad to hear they were able to diagnose you right away. For some people that seems to be almost as difficult as trying to cope with the actual disease. Hopefully the 6mp will help you to feel better real soon. Hopefully your brothers will have some helpful insight and support to get you through this too :)

Welcome to the forum! Keep us updated!

Hi Grace and welcome. Bummer that the Crohn's got to you in addition to your brothers :(

Regardless, I hope that your current treatment works out for you. I wish you all the best!

*hugs*

Thanks for the responses. i haven't figured out how to post individual responses. I'm wondering why a few of you who replied no longer take 6mp? What caused you to change?

Grace, my son was on 6mp a little over a year. Though he felt great most of that time, his bloods never showed full remission and a c-scope showed new ulcers forming in his colon. He never had any side effects from the 6mp. Good luck with it!

Hi Grace and welcome! I am sorry about your recent diagnosis. Like you, I was completely healthy and felt like my diagnosis came out of no where! It can be tough to come to terms with, but it does get better.

I hope 6mp gets you well and keeps you well for years and years! Once again, welcome to the forum!

Hey, I'm also a moderate metabolizer of 6mp. The way my doctor explained it is moderate metabolizers are more likely to have kidney/liver failure or will kill the white cells even quicker than they should be. They started me off on 25 mg then moved me up to 50 mg where they're keeping me. I'm having trouble with side effects from 6mp(infections, trouble with blood clotting, things like that)

Welcome Grace!

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, keeping it all in the family, huh? :)

Hope you start feeling better soon and can get back to running those marathons!
