I was diagnosed with Crohn's in mid-December, and put on 40mg of prednisone along with pentasa. I've been tapering since mid-January and had to go back up a couple of times because my diarrhea came back. I finally got down to 10mg this week, and I think I'm going to have to go back up again. Is it normal to have lots of problems with tapering, or is it possible that the pentasa isn't working?

I'm sorry to hear that you are not healing with prednisone.

Sounds like you may have to be placed on something stronger than pentasa and maybe kept on prednisone until the new medication kicks in. Because it is much riskier to keep you on long term or bouncing off and on of prednisone given all of the potential side effects beyond what you probably experience now.

Have you discussed your other treatment options with your GI yet? Has he told you what his next plan of action is if the prednisone tapers and pentasa keep failing?

Thanks for the response! My doctor said that we wouldn't know if the pentasa was working until I was off of the prednisone, so I'm supposed to be tapering off and then having another scope to check if the inflammation is gone. I have to call on Tuesday to let him know how the taper is going, but when I suggested that the pentasa wasn't working he seemed to think that it wouldn't be making a difference yet?
