UK Study: IBD sufferers more likely to develop blood clots

Yet another good reason to use Fish/Krill Oil, Turmeric, Ginger and other blood thinning supplements which also have many other potential benefits to our disease.

Some of the benefits of Fish/ Krill Oil are Cholesterol lowering, and balancing of good Cholesterol to bad, although that is an over simplification. Makes the blood more slippery. Also is anti-bacterial and ant-inflammatory and an anti-oxidant.

Turmeric reduces the TNF immune response, without suppression of the immune system in general. It is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, thins the blood slightly and is a Cancer preventative. Many other benefits not even mentioned.

For a literal book Of studies on Turmeric, down load the following PDF. It is large.

Ginger has many of the same properties as Turmeric and helps the absorption of other supplements, prevents nausea and helps digestion.

No known side effects from any of them. Of course always check for possible interactions between any medications, especially prescription blood thinners.

I'm on blood thinners now and the only things they say to avoid are alcohol, cranberries, and green leafy vegetables.

I think I remember my doc telling me a long time ago we are at higher risks for clots. I also think one of my rheumatology blood tests showed an increase in some factor for clotting. Thanks GJG, you are reminding me to get that test redone after 6 months to see if it has decreased.

Wonder if anyone else on here besides Nyx has had a DVT? And if it was during a hospital visit or not? Too bad on the leafy greens Nyx......

I diffently believe the study. I have had several blood clots--a deep vein thrombosis, a Pulmunary Embolism (almost killed me) and about five other superficial blood clots. Genetic testing did not reveal any problems.

Thanks for posting this link, GJG!

After having IBD since 1990, I was just diagnosed with blood clots (DVT left leg, multiple superficial clots both legs, and bilateral PE) in December. I had a Crohn's flare up last summer but after starting on pred and 6mp in September my GI symptoms were under control, so my doctors are trying to figure out if the clots are from the Crohn's or something else.

I had a slew of blood work done to check for clotting disorders. The only one that came back positive was "anticardiolipin antibodies". According to my Rheum., this test has to be repeated several times and come back positive each time before diagnosing me with "anticardiolipin antibody syndrome".

Again, I really appreciate you posting this info. I have a good GI, but he had never heard of the link between IBD and clots.

Sabrina
