Ulcerative colitis, not crohn's, deaths down from 1982

(HealthDay)—Over the past 30 years in Denmark, mortality from ulcerative colitis (UC) has decreased, but mortality from Crohn's disease (CD) has remained persistently higher than the general population, according to research published in the January issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Tine Jess, M.D., Dr.Sci., of the National Center for Health Data and Disease Control in Copenhagen, and colleagues used data from a Danish cohort of patients with inflammatory bowel disease to compare mortality from 1982 to 2010 for 15,361 patients with CD; 36,080 patients with UC; and 2,858,096 matched controls. The researchers observed a considerable increase in mortality in the first year after diagnosis with inflammatory bowel disease. Among individuals with UC and CD, intermediate and long-term mortalities increased by 10 and 50 percent, respectively, compared with the general population. For patients with UC, overall mortalities decreased from 1990 to 1999 and from 2000 to 2010, compared with 1982 to 1989; this was mainly due to decreased mortality for colorectal cancer, gastrointestinal disease, and suicide. In contrast, there was no similar reduction observed for individuals with CD. This was attributed to long-term increased mortality from infections, cancer, respiratory diseases, and gastrointestinal diseases. "Of note, patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease in recent years did not have a higher mortality from infections than patients diagnosed before the introduction of biologics in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease," the authors write.

I find it shocking, people with crohn's disease tend to have immunodeficiencies, if you treat them with immune suppressants, steroids, 6mp, biologics, doesn't matter, you leave them completely vulnerable to infections, the current treatment is completely wrong.

Fifteen years

Yesterday was the anniversary of my surgery to remove colon cancer. It was jan22nd 1998. Fifteen years. It seems a lifetime. During that time I have suffered severe peripheral neuropathy,duodenal and peptic ulceration. The last lot of stomach ulcers were dxed as stomach ca before the biopsies came back as ulcers. Pancreatitis and lost my gallbladder.Psoriatic arthritis flare after 18 mos of 75mg a day of prednisone. Type two diabetes ,and finally auto-immune protein -urea,losing over 3 grams of protein a day thru my kidneys. The medications they want to treat me with are all powerful immuno-suppressants. Stuff like cyclosporine,cyclophosphomide ,imuran ect. Taking these drugs is like playing russian roulette for a cancer survivor. I see my kidney guy today and will try to get back on mtx again. It seems the least of the evils. Last time I was on it I developed a micro-nodular basal cell carcinoma on my face. They are the only basal cell carc's considered dangerous as they go deep for the nerves. They got it in time but it is a rare cancer and immuno-suppressants seem to foster rare cancers. Statistically I show up as a survivor but statistics rarely tell the full story...Ron.
