Hi, I have just joined this forum. For seven years I have been battling this illness but sometimes have no symptoms for weeks when suddenly an attack comes from nowhere. It mostly starts with a dull pain below (almost behind) my right lower rib which is then followed by a burning sensation across my stomach. I may also (but not frequently) have a bout of gastro. During these attacks I experience tinnitus, blocked ears, a very sick feeling which may vary in intensity over a period of weeks. Not much nausea or any vomiting.

I have had two colonoscopy's and gastrocopy's (last a year ago) and many xrays, and various scans, blood tests etc. I have been treated with many courses of antibiotics but no definite diagnosis has been established. In fact both gastro enterologists found only some evidence of diverticulitis, hence all the antibiotics. One year ago I was diagnosed with a small stomach ulcer which was treated with a very strong course of antibiotics (V5??). Afterwards a breath test showed that the Helicobacter Pylori bacteria which was present had been erradicated. Still I get these attacks. I have tried various diets and eliminating certain foods. I eat very little red meat, am reasonably fit and active with tennis and cycling. I am a 62 year old male and during this period of illness also had greenlight surgery for an enlarged prostate.

My frustration is that I do not know what is wrong with me and am now unwilling to continue to visit the doctor who told me the last time just to be more positive. I have been to a number of doctors who in the end refer me to the specialists. I am just going around in circles. I suspect I might have some form of inflamed bowl desease but am rather confused. During these attacks I also become extremely depressed and feel my situation is totally hopeless.

Perhaps there mght be someone else with a similar story?

Hi and welcome to the forum! :D

I wouldn't give up on the specialist search. Sometimes it can take a while to find the right one for you. Many people have gone through years of testing before they get a diagnosis. Don't give up. Also Diverticulitis is a form of IBD. I'm not sure if that's the only issue you're dealing with though.

You've done the small bowel follow through, MRI, MRE, CT scan, pill cam, and ultrasound yet? With the blood work, what all were they testing? Have you had your vitamin levels tested (Iron, B12, Folic Acid, vit A, B, C, D, E, Magnesium, Potassium, Zinc etc)? Many people with IBD suffer from vitamin deficiencies and being low or deficient can cause a wealth of unwanted symptoms including depression.

I don't blame you for not wanting to see that doctor again. If it helps, a lot of us have been there too. For a while before I was diagnosed, everyone (including my doctor) just said, "Well, it's your nerves. Don't worry so much." It's the most stressful and frustrating thing, ironically.

Have you gone to the specialists the doctors have referred you to and had no luck? I'm a little confused on that part. As Crabby said, it can take a few tries to find the right specialist for you.

Hoping you find your answers!

Hi Hennieo and welcome.

That must be so frustrating to be experiencing :( I'm sorry you're having to deal with this.

When you get one of your attacks, how long do they last? And about how often do you get them, every few weeks?

All my best to you.
