I am unexpectedly pregnant and miserable.
A quick background on me... About 6 months ago everything was all scheduled for me to have a stem cell transplant to treat the crohns. At my final evaluation it was determined that the medication they had been using to "bridge the gap" until we raised the money for the transplant had helped me enough that I temporarily didn't fit the guidelines and needed to wait for it to wear off and my disease to increase in severity again in order to proceed ( this would have been good news, except I had become allergic to the medicine and couldn't have another dose, so the fact it helped me just felt like it delayed the transplant that was still inevitable).
About 3 months later (3 months ago) I began to feel the disease worsening and felt certain I would be returning for the transplant shortly. Then, within the month my period was late, and surprise surprise... I'm pregnant!i guess the good news about the timing is I had stopped all meds a few months prior anticipating the transplant.
Back to the issue at hand... I am now about 11 weeks along and not feeling so great.

I have read so many happy stories on here of people feeling amazing during pregnancy and was optimistic I too would catch a little break from the pain that is crohns. So far, no such luck. I have such terrible " morning sickness" ( more like morning, afternoon, evening, and night) that I am lucky to keep any food down ( ESP. Fluids, as odd as it seems to me that I can handle dry cereal better than sipping water...anyone else experience this?). And in the event I manage to keep anything down I can count on severe and painful diarrhea and cramping as may reward.

I have called both my ob and gastro. The ob says the crohns doctor needs to treat, and the gastro says he thinks most of it is pregnancy related and to call the ob.
To top it all off I began having excruciating left shoulder pain yesterday. It kept me up all night in so much pain with every movement that all I could do was focus on remembering to breath and adjust positions every 30 seconds. I saw my pcp and he diagnosed the shoulder pain as a rotator cuff problem and prescribed physical therapy. I am questioning this diagnosis because I didn't do anything physically strenuous to have hurt my arm in the first place, and I feel like it is more likely that is relates to the pregnancy somehow because I have never had shoulder problems in the past. (Also, my bp was 84/60, pulse 91, and pulse ox was 95. Normal for me is more like 110/65, 65, and 100. I'm not sure how the difference in pulse rate and oxygenation tie into everything, or that they are even a big deal... and I think the bp is dehydration related, but still the difference in numbers is concerning to me on top of everything else that is going on).
If anyone has similar experiences and can share it would be greatly appreciated. ESP. Regarding the shoulder pain. I feel like I'm going crazy never able to be comfortable and always having something hurting. Any advice or input would be great! Thanks fellow crohnies!

For your shoulder pain- you said right shoulder correct? Do you still have your gallblader? Gallblader problems can have what they call as "referee pain" so~ if you still have your GB I would ask your primary care on it. I have never been pregnant. And have not been disagnosed all that long with CD so I am still learning. Best of luck. And congratulations. :)

Hope you feel better soon xo

Congratulations on the baby.

My little farm girl is the one with the colitis not me but I have been pregnant AND had my gallbladder removed.

I saw you typed left shoulder pain. Gallbladder usually hits right but that doesn't mean you don't have something going on there.

As far as your doctors and the back and forth you need to take control and get answers quick. Morning sickness can cause serous problem in your pregnancy. If it gets much worse you need to get help and make them (docs) fight it out on what to do.

I apologize I thought I read right shoulder. I hope you find some answers and feel better very soon.

Hey there and congrats on the baby! It is my daughter who is the Crohnie but I also suffered from terrible morning sickness through my entire first pregnancy. Only gained 7 pounds. Would start vomiting and couldn't stop all day. My second pregnancy it stopped at 7 months. My third about 6 months. These are the things that helped (and by helped I mean took the edge off and maybe delayed my vomiting) me in no particular order and some will help for a while and then I had to switch.

- ginger
- saltines before my feet hit the floor in the a.m. and before I went to sleep
- sour lemon drops
- peppermint
- exercise...I know right? Believe it or not just getting out and getting fresh air and exercising could take the edge off
- high fat food (Boston Cream doughnuts) or high salt food (pickles, olives, corned beef hash).

But the best thing I ever did was with my last pregnancy and that was acupuncture! At first it only helped when I was on the table but with each treatment the relief got longer and longer until one day I left her office and the nausea never returned. I kept waiting for it but it was gone for good.

Oh I so feel for you. Hydrate as much as you can because as you know the dehydration only makes the nausea worse.

Re the shoulder pain - read up on Frozen Shoulder. The way you describe the pain sounds like how it felt to me! I literally had times that the pain was so bad, I'd drop to my knees to simply hold my arm and breathe through it!

If that is what you have, it isn't necessarily caused by injury (it can just happen!). It took approximately a year to 'unfreeze' for me... but, the pain did gradually alleviate, probably the worst of it (the 'excruciating' pain) lasted 2-3 months. I wasn't given any real treatment for it... maybe nsaids (which you shouldn't have with crohns though)??

I did go for physiotherapy - it did help tons, however, this was after 7 or 8 months of frozen shoulder, and it was already beginning to feel a bit better, so not sure if it was the PT or that it simply improved?? But, if this is what you have, definitely worth trying!

Sorry you're not feeling better!!

Good luck!

Hi. Sorry you are having such a rough start with your little blessing. Don't go too long without intervention if you aren't keeping fluids down. You may need some IV fluids which can make you feel better in all realms. You should be peeing at least 3 times a day to make sure you are getting the minimum fluids. Lower BP has to do with pregnancy and dehydration. Elevated pulse has to do with pain, dehydration and possibly the stress of it all, including just being pregnant. The lower Oxygen saturation may also be dehydration?

My daughters find Digest Zen (essential oils by DoTerra) applied topically help with their crohn's and heartburn - should be safe in pregnancy too. AromaTouch (also an essential oil by same company) applied three times a day to your shoulder can help. My daughter uses lemongrass oil on her inflamed joints (crohn's related) and this has been helpful too.

I went off all my meds (at dr's advice) and then got unexpectedly pregnant and was really sick too! No one wanted to do much about it. :/ I had extreme "morning" sickness all the time up into the third trimester. I didn't push harder for help (too busy puking), but have since heard about pregnant women with hyperemesis getting zofran and IV fluids.

For many women the morning sickness eases as the pregnancy progresses, and I hope that is the case for you too! I found ginger (sucking on ginger chews which are REALLY strong, ginger tea, ginger ale) helped, and sucking on pieces of ice helped too.
