Well, Kians app went well yesterday. the consultant was happy with the last bloods and didnt seems concerned about the esr as he had the sore throat then too. Her has grown 3cm since december but didnt gain any weight. His appetite did go down a bit though when he was on the flagyl but its back up again. His Dad is tall and built slim and Kian is going the same way so its not a concern. We do have to do a fecal calprotectin test and the consultant wants us back in 3 months this time to see how Kian is doing. i think his ibd nurse said 3 weeks for the results of the test so will update again. Fingers x its all ok. All is well at the minute so we happy with that :) xx

Great to hear things are settling! That Fecal cal should give you a lot of valuable information. My son and family are tall and slim too but kids should gain about 12 lbs per year while growing. If you are seeing no weight gain or weight loss, even just a pound or two, that would concern me. We had a few Dr.'s tell us our son was just slim like us but not gaining weight over a year is never acceptable. This may not be your situation, it was ours but just wanted to let you know our experience. Now that our son's fecal cal is normal, gaining weight isn't an issue.

We were where you are at for about a year before the fecal cal got normal, so it can be a process. I would be happy with where you are at for the moment too. Hopefully the weight will start to naturally start to go up. (((hugs))))

^^^^ Yeah that, but I probably wouldn't worry to much at this point, I'm sure he will start gaining and growing now that he is feeling well. Hope the FC comes back normal. Sounds like a pretty good visit.
It took Jack a while once everything normalized to start growing and gaining weight. We had to add supplemental nutrition but he doesn't eat a lot.

so if his weight gain is slow what do they normally do? is it supplements? this is the first time he has had no weight gain. x

That is what we did but Jack only gained 5-8 pounds over a 3 year period. I wish we would have done the supplements earlier but was always told "he will start growing anytime now, I'm not worried" until he was 13 and got sick and lost even more weight then everybody was worried because he really had nothing to lose. Once we added the supplements he went from 77 lbs at 13 years old to 100 lbs and grew 2 inches in about 8 weeks, since we've slowed down on supplements the growth has slowed down as well but he is definitely still growing, he has fingernails! and has outgrown a pair of shoes that were bought 2 months ago, he could wear shoes for a year or longer before. I think we will get some additional growth this summer.
I would just keep an eye on it for the next few months and if he doesn't gain then I would definitely speak up to the doctor, could be just a fluke this time.

How old is Kian again? Is he any taller with the lack of weight gain?

Now that DS is 13, we are starting to see some growth even though he's not feeling 100% - puberty! There are so many factors to growth. Like the others said, as long as it's not going down, it should be okay.

Between the ages of 5 and 11 DS would grow in slow, small spurts. Sometimes only a pound over a months time, but growth nonetheless. At age 11 we introduced supplemental drinks (Boost Plus and Ensure Plus) for the extra calories and that seemed to help some. He's taking on my husbands body shape though... tall and thin, so it's been really hard to "see" the growth since its been more up than out. This past month was 0 pounds, but he is almost 1/2 inch taller. To look at him though, you'd think he's lost weight.

If your doctor agrees, maybe look into some supplements, but I wouldn't be overly worried just yet.

kian turned 10 in feb. yes he has grown since his last app, just not put weight on. I blame the flagyll too as his appetite was awful when he was on it. Hoping now it does get better now thats he is off it completely. xx

A didn't gain much weight for several years so she has been taking Periactin. She's been on it for almost 2 months and has gained about 5 lbs. I'm thrilled with how she has filled out! She'll be stopping the med soon so we'll see if the weight remains.

Amy has gained maybe 2 pounds in the last year and has since lost it again. She is about 4ft 8 and has grown a few centimetres this year.weighs 65lb.a year ago close to 80 is this normal for a 10 year old?

Poppets mum,

My daughter is going to be 9 in August and is about 74lbs. I would say 80 seems right, although it can vary quite a bit from child to child. My daughter gained about 8 lbs from last year (but she is pretty tall for her age).

The endocrinologist told us that growth would stop when the BMI percentage got around 20%. My son was growing about 3 inches a year and then once he got around 20% he grew about a half inch that year. His BMI is around 60% now and growth is back to 3 inches per year. Our Endocrinologist said mild to moderate crohn's would not effect his growth, but low weight would. As long as they keep that weight up, they should grow normally. (Easier said than done!!)

As a comparison, my daughter is 8 1/2 and weighs 49 lbs. and is 47 in. tall. Our GI plots her height/weight on a growth chart at each visit and that makes a nice visual.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I shouldn't focus too much on the fact that she has lost 15 lbs in a year as she is still within normal range?

Poppets mum,

I don't know how I read your post wrong, you were very clear, but I did!:ybatty: I thought you said your daughter gained 15 lbs. I would be very concerned about a 15 lb weight loss over a year. When my son was diagnosed his weight loss was 2 lbs over the year. He would normally gain about 14 per year so this was not normal for him. Even if she is still in normal range that amount of weight loss would be concerning. ((((Hugs))))

So sorry for the confusion.

^^^ yeah that
OUr doc was concerned when DS lost 2 lbs over a series of weeks very slowly.
Kids that age do not lose weight.

Our GP is worried but GI doc isn't cos at last appointment just after Christmas, she had gained 1lb, a month later that was gone. He says no way to Crohns cos she was able to put a little on at that time. All I know is despite the fact that she is eating ( even though painful) her clothes are baggy and she needs to wear belts all the time.

Jack gained and lost over a 3 year time period when we looked at growth charts all together over a 3 year period he had gained about 5 pounds and grown an inch. It was a message from the GP to the GI that he was concerned about weight that prompted GI to look at growth charts all together and that is when he became concerned and decided we needed to do something about it. Jack always seemed to be up a pound or 2 or at least didn't weigh less then the last time when GI appt's came around but never seemed to be able to maintain it.
Jack ate as well just not a lot. I think it wasn't until the GI took a step back and looked at things overall for the past couple of years instead of just how Jack looked and felt at the appointment that finally made the difference.

Kids should be gaining weight, not losing weight (unless you have a child with obesity issues and is on a special diet/exercise program to lose weight)... My son loses a couple of pounds at the beginning of hockey season each year, but quickly puts it back on (always a fluid issue). IF he lost weight in between I would be concerned.

Doctor said that no way Crohn's is causing it? Is he a good doctor in other ways? That's an odd statement...

Hope she is feeling better...

I would be concerned about the weight loss. Have you started a food diary. If I go back to our many visits to different specialists due to low iron and low body weight the diary was helpful.

Without the diary I got comments like she can't possibility eat as much meat as you say. We got from other parents just feed her more until they saw her at fourteen eat more than her teenager boy team mates.

It also may be a good idea to get the gp write a letter to the GI saying how concern he is about the weightloss.

Gp did write to him and he said it is just Ibs and we need to concentrate on coping with it. At last appointment he made me feel as if I am worrying over nothing.

Well that is an odd thing to say...concentrate on coping with it. Little wonder you felt the way you did.

You have every right to be concerned over a 15lb loss in a child who is doing nothing to achieve that and even more so in a child with Crohn's. I don't understand how the GI equates a 1lb gain compared with a 15lb loss as having no relationship to Crohn's without further investigation.

Any chance of you getting a second opinion?

Treatment plan is counseling for pain control which has finished already. We have this weird thing going on where he was absolutely certain she had crohns with her small bowel abscess, scopes showed otherwise. Now this go around biopsies from second set of scopes showed mild to moderate inflammation that he puts down to prep. I am so confused and am having such a hard time believing this diagnosis when it doesn't seem to act like the IBS I keep hearing about.

Have any small bowel studies been carried out aside from where the scope reached?

I know bowel prep can induce a flare in some people and that it can produce some inflammatory changes but would it cause moderate inflammation in someone with with supposed IBS??? I don't know but I would have thought mild might be more on the mark???

IBS won't cause an abscess and does not cause structural changes to the bowel. What did he say caused the abscess after he said no Crohn's?
