Hi - I am new to the site diagnosed with Crohn's 12/14. Apologies in advance if I am posting this to the wrong site but I am desperate for answers. Is it possible to be deficient in B12 with a level of 495? I received my results today and am very surprised as I am experiencing tingling in fingers and foot, swollen achy tongue and extreme forgetfulness and loss of words ( I feel as if I am losing my mind at times).

Yes, that's on the low end and you may have an inaccurate result and can certainly benefit from supplementing. Even high dose b12 is safe, it's water soluble so you pee it out.

I was low on b12 and now give myself monthly injections which are better absorbed (especially if you have ilieal involvement). Injections, along with a change in diet, and my numbers are now normal.

Thank you for your responses. You have no idea how happy you have made me feel because My primary doctor told me that I am in the normal range and do not require any further testing. Any suggestions on kind of supplement I should buy OTC? The memory thing is really frightening! My Crohns is in my ileum.and GI appt end of April

Methylcobalamin is the proper bioactive form of B12. Jarrow makes a good one that I use. I also do weekly shots but will switch to monthly.

adenosylcobalamin is also available on the market there are 3 natural forms that exist in food derived b12, although some of our intestinal bacteria create b12 as well. 3 forms are hydroxycobalamin, methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin.
i take methyl and adeonsyl, but adenosylcobalamin only have to take 1/2 a pill every 2 weeks. I get methyl from a multivitamin and my b12 levels are fine doing this.
