Vitamin D Supplements Could Fight Crohn's Disease

Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

Thats intersting, especially since I started taking Vit D just the oher day, seems to make me feel a little better already.

When I went to the specialist at UCLA a few weeks ago he asked me to start taking a 2000 IU. D3 supplement every day in addition to what was included in my Multi-Vitamin and Calcium supplement.

Hard to say since I am on 30mg a day of Pred, and started Humira and Metho injections this week.

That being said I feel fantastic. Have not had any D or real pain in over a month.

Well thats awesome that you are finally feeling well CH!!
Wheather its one of the meds or a combo of them all at least its helping! :)

Hobo!!! Yahoo...You think its the new meds or the prednisone? I'm hoping for you its the new meds.... :) Sue

My vitamin D was so low they have me taking 50,000 iu once a week for 6 weeks to get it higher. Then I have to maintain 1500-2000iu after that. So far I haven't noticed a difference since starting the vitamin d a few weeks ago, but we'll see how it goes for me.

I am guessing it is the Prednisone since I only started the new meds on Tuesday. Been at 40 a day of Pred since two days before Xmas. I went down to 30 on Tuesday and I am supposed to drop another 10mg next week.

I take 1000 iu in the Winter months, and I may take it year round. I am still looking into what the optimum serum level should be.

That article is very interesting! I go on Monday to have my vitamin levels tested, hopefully they will check my vit D as well so that I can start taking them!

Had I not joined this forum I would have never thought to have my vitamin levels checked or anything, none of my docs have said anything to me about taking supplements to make up for what I'm not absorbing! So a big THANKYOU to all of ya'll :)

The current thinking is that 60 units or whatever measurement they use for the blood test is what some people are shooting for. I think the current normal range is around 40.

Regarding absorbing supplements. I take Ginger partly because it is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, but also because Ginger helps the body absorb other supplements. I also take Turmeric because it is an anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-bacterial. It also has a long list of other benefits such as preventing Alzheimer's Disease, so on and so on.

The trouble with Turmeric is it is hard to absorb. Ginger helps this along also.

If you are going to bother to take supplements, you may as well get as much as you can from it.

Dan how do you take your ginger and tumeric? I used to have an omelette every morning and just mix them into it, but now I find I cant deal with eggs very well so Im looking for new ways to incorporat them every day.

I buy capsules from Puritans Pride. They have pretty good prices.

I do not like the taste of either. My wife has a little stomach trouble when she eats sometimes. The Ginger capsules relieves that quickly.

My vit d level was 6. I take one 50,000 unit capsule each week. I will start my 5th week on Sunday. I haven't really noticed a difference yet. I'm sure that my GI will want to check the level again soon.

After my one and only (life threatening) crohn's attack, I was prescribed Adcal D3. This is a big chalky tablet containing calcium and vit D. Maybe that's why I haven't had another flare, although I thought I was taking it for bone health. When I was at my worst they gave me vit d jabs. It was like magic in elevating energy levels!!

On top of Vit D and B I starting taking Aloe Vera pills and noticed the number of my movements nearly cut in half. Still have the sudden rush but down to about 3-5 a day.

Has anyone seen the documentary Food Matters? All about the magic of vitamins and such. Worth the watch.

FogDucker, can you tolerate veg? Mild curry? I cook with turmeric and ginger as much as I can and also oregano which is also good I believe for inflammation?
I have my veg mainly in soups so that I can blend them down til they are really smooth.
Going to post a recipe now in the Diet sub-forum for one that I made yesterday that was really yummy.

I took vit D because I was deficient and the doc took me off it as soon as I was no longer defiant. My doc said too much of it can be a bad thing. Also I felt no better on or off of it.
