I would just like to know if anybody knows the chances of my children also getting crohns.I'm the only one in my family that has it yet doctors say its genetic.Does anyone think its very likely my children could end up with it?

Thanks.
Jenny

I would have to know if your parents both had Crohn's and how it is in your family and then if your husband has it and his family. I also would need to find out if Crohn's is dominant or recessive. If both you have Crohn's then their will be between a 75 and 100 percent depending if you are mixed bred of it or not.

You may want to go to one of those gene people.

Good luck

I believe the risk to your (future) children is in the 15-33% range. For some reason there is also a bit higher risk if the mother has IBD than if the father does. Still, it is widely believed that the risk is no greater than 1/3.

I have kids and that worries me as well. If they say thier stomach hurts or seem to not have an appetite I seem to keep a closer eye on it than most Moms would I think. Here is some info I found on the subject...hope it helps =)

What are the chances with a child of a Mother with IBD will develop one of these diseases?

It is possible, but certainly not enevitable, that a child of the Mother with one of these diseases might develop either illness. Recent studies suggest that the risk of the offspring of developing IBD if one parent has the disease is about 9 percent, and if two parents have the disease, as high as 36 percent. When IBD clusters in families, there doesn't seem to be any clear-cut mode of inheritance. Because of this, the diseases are called "familial" and are not "genetic". At present no one can predict whether a child will "inherit" the disease from his or her parent. If a child is to develop IBD, one cannot predict at what age it will happen.

Here is the link from where I got the info. It has a lot of women's issues.

Toataly agree im the same, nobody in my familly history have ever suffered from CD im the first (lucky me not) so who knows xx

I too was worried about this. I also think your doc has misinformed you, crohn's has genetic tendencies, that doesn't mean its genetic, its not that cut and dry. He should know that. The info above that Tonya has displayed is really helpful and sort of explains what I'm trying to say. I too am the only one in my family with crohns and my brother has undergone testing as he had similar symptoms with muscle aches and joint swelling. Luckily he hasn't got crohns, unluckily, he has reactive arthritis instead. Hopefully, all our kids will be ok, if not (god forbid) then at least they can be helped and supported by the experts (us!)

Neither of my parents has it. My dad's sister does (but none of her 5 kids has it). My dad's mother's sister does (none of her children or grandchildren has it). Genetically, it's hit and miss. However, I would just kind of be aware and keep an eye out on stomach ailments.

Thank you everybody.I feel better knowing there are more people out there whose children havent gotten it.I too will definitly be keeping a close eye on any stomach problems though.

I think the important thing to rememeber is that the majority of people who have had parents with IBD do not get Inflammatory Bowel Disease themselves. It is natural to be worried and probably over analyse common stomach aches, but probability is on your side that you kids will not be affected by this disease.

I think we need to find out for certain what is causing it to know if it can be passed on. Some say heredity others say environmental. Truth is, they don't really know.

That doesn't really apply because while they have discovered genes that seem to predispose you to Crohn's, there is no known cause.

Surprisingly, the odds of developing IBD is increased more by having siblings with the disease vs. parents.

Hope this helps.

It is more likely for women to get CD then men actually, which I find odd, but chance of your kids getting it are suppposed to be higher, I believe like 30 percent higher, which iisnt that bad, considering 70 percent of people dotn have a relative with it....your more likely to be scareed to get it without someone in your family having it, like me.

No one in my family has it.

My grandfather had stomach cancer, thats the only GI problems.

this is a very big worry for me.. something to think about... but no matter how much I think about it.. I still want kids..
knowing that both Jonny and I have it, scares me to death, my gynocologist (sp?) said in his opinion 2 CD parents will = a crohns baby. I think he is an ass, and shouldnt speak unless he can prove what he is saying.. but maybe thats just me.
