what does this mean?

hi guys,

im really getting down and very confused over all the tests,:depressed:

so far had colonoscopy which showed inflamation in the illium, and rectal polyp and fissure
1st ct showed nothing significant but didnt reach the illium,
Biopsy results normal
2nd ct reached the illium and got results today from secretary,
thickning of the illium, so the surgeon wants to see me again tomorrow to give stronger steroids and change from dipentum to asa, also will refer me to gi, who i have selected as prof fergus shanahan in cork, ( he is my mum and sisters GI and to them he is God!),

do you think this is a sign of crohns, I still dont know! or maybe im in denial, :ybatty:

Sheila,

Quick post as I am off to lie down...

Definately sounds like you have Crohns from what you have posted and that he wants to up your treatment to Aza and stronger steroids too. Also the referral is him saying you need more in depth overall care from someone who knows more about your needs and its good you are going to the same one as your mum and sister.

Thickening of the ileum can be a sign of ongoing inflammation or scarring related to crohns and the ileum is the most common site to have crohns too..

Hang in there honey. Push to see him as soon as possible. Take a list of questions. Things will improve!

thanks jan,
you are great for putting up with me, i sent you pm, i didnt realise you were online sorry, yes i think that is what he is going to tell me but what a journey, the ups and downs, its like a rollercoaster, and god some of you have to wait years for diagnosis, i just dont know how people cope, and ye are so sick, you are all angels,

what we lack in colon's, we make up for with heart:D

so right!

you are so right jed,

i have been visiting this forum for the last few weeks, and im totally in awe of everyone here, I am lucky that I work 3 12hr shifts in Dell at the weekends so i have plently of time during the week to log on, but i am so taken with everybody and how they are getting on, they are an inspiration, I hope that I dont have crohns, and i suppose i just send get well messages really because eventhough my sister and mum were v.bad with this horrible condition, i dont have as much insight to give advise as the rest of ye do, really ye all must be sick of hearing me ask questions but i find it a great sense of relief to talk somewhere, were there is such support,

thanks
sheila:)

i usually dont have much in the advice on meds etc, i just find it therapeutic to let others know someone is reading about how they feel, and letting them know they're not alone:)

and keep asking questions, we never seem to get bored with answering them:D

thanks jed,
your right to know people care enough to take time out to read your posts it quite reassuring

oh for gods sake!

hi guys,

just an update for you, well i saw the surgeon today and he said the ct scan showed minor terminal illitis, (i think thats how you spell it ), he said it was what he thought but doesnt know weather it will turn into full blown crohns, now im much better after a few days of meds, and he told me to stay on them for about another week and to try and ween myself off them and if it comes back to go back on them straight away, he is also making appt for GI Prof Shanahan, and that he should be able to tell me more,

does anyone know what terminal illitis is, or what it means:eek2:
im just glad im getting answers and that im feeling much better, i wish you all could feel the same way, i hope ye do soon,

sheila:)

Hi there. I always thought illitis is a form of Crohn's, but I am not an expert by any means. That is great you are feeling better. Good luck with your GI doc appointment!

As Pen says Crohns Ileitis is in the ileum (the last section of the small bowel) or terminal ileum (which relates to the junction where the small and large bowel meet and alot of nutrients etc are absorbed there).

Crohns Colitis refers to colon or large bowel.

Gastric refers to stomach.

Duodenal or duodenum crohns is the first part of the small bowel after it leaves the stomach.

That help?

thanks

thanks guys for all your comments, yes i think i just cant believe it! The surgeon said it is quite unusual to get it at my age 38, that it normally effects younger people, "i thought i was quite young actually", he said i might never get a bad bout of chrons, but he cant say that i wont, what do you think i can do to prevent it getting out of hand,???????:confused2:

hi jan, hope you are feeling much better!:)

sheila:eek2:

hi Sheila

yup any kind of 'itis' purely means inflammation of... & we can get Crohns inflammation virtually anywhere throughout the intestinal system.. so your diagnosis is just saying where it is...

lol it's not terminal, as in terminal flatulence ;)

i would totally support you trying to avoid it getting any worse - sounds like you have it quite localised and getting under control, so what you do from this point on may have a real effect on future Crohns activity... i'd say diet is of paramount importance, also avoiding regular stress, getting plenty rest/sleep.
