what meds work for you?

Theres seems to be a ton of meds out there but what works best?

Whenever i have a bad flair up my doc just puts me straight on Prednisone. While this is effective it really knocks the stuffin outa me. Now my docs got me on imuran and pentasa.

I dont feel like im informed enough about whats out there. Ive had Crohns 5 years and been on pentasa pretty much that whole time however i dont feel it does anything for me. The steroids work whenever i need them but i know there not a long term solution.

Hi guys i've read a few posts now saying don't stay on Prednisone too long but how long is too long. I've been taking it now for nearly 8 weeks starting off on 30mg and dropping down 5mg every two weeks, i just went down to 15mg but started getting really bad stomach pains so have increased it back up to 20mg but i want to come off it as soon as poss as the side effects aren't great.

When I was first diagnosed, sulfasalazine alone put me in remission for quite a while. Recently Humira put me in a great remission but only for 4 months.

I guess the slower you taper off from pred, the greater your chances will be of not running into problems. A normal course might be 8 weeks if you start at 40 and taper down 5mg each week, but I would say that would be the minimum amount of time.

I was on Pred for about 8 months, but I had a very VERY slow taper schedule. I was going down by 1mg at the end. I started at 60mg

I have failed all medications except prednisone (which sucks my big left toe!)

I am currently giving Humira a whirl.

methotrexate is currently working adream for me on both my arthritus and crohns.

I still nibble on pred's if i feel a little off, but thats has been rare lately.

I don’t know if I’m typical but this is what I’ve been on:

Asacol, Predisone for 1 year
Asacol, Azathiaprine (sp?) for 2 years
Asacol for 6 years
Nothing for 2 years
Asacol for 1 year

For the couple of years I took nothing I felt great but a couple of times I had some blood in my stools so the doc insisted I go back on the Asacol, I’m sure its this drug that makes me feel so bad.
