Sorry I'm uncertain of the protocol for that surgery. I'm on my mobile at the moment and can't easily post links but if you visit the surgery forum or type the key words "small bowel obstruction" in the forum search bar it may pull up some applicable threads. Sending hugs your way!

It really depends of the GI condition. As far as I know, obstructions that require surgery result in resection. If they can't reconnect the GI track together because of the intensity of disease or what not, it is possible they need to create a temporary ileostomy to allow proper healing. I don't know if they could only be doing a balloon dilatation if there is an actual occlusion of the digestive system, but doing so is generally only a temporary solution as it tends to occlude again in the future.

All 3 of my surgeries have been small bowel resections. One thing I would advise if the doctor suggests is a temporary illeostomy. This will help cut down on scar tissue which could cause a further surgery sooner than if not done.

One thing about crohns is that unless you can find something that really works for him to put in remission then he will more than likely have to have a future surgery at the same location, but there are things you can do to help maybe delay and may even prevent surgery in the future if the first one is done right.

No an illeostomy isn't fun but it is better than other surgeries.
