I go back to college on the 5th of January for one day, then start college properly the week after then the week after that i've got a philosophy exam.

I'm really stressing about this, which as you all probably know, isn't good and can make you worse.

I've got the doctors on the 4th, but that's with the GP, so they can't do anything, just talk and stuff.. no help on pain or anything.

I can't wake up before 10am and I have to eat at around certain times. For college, I have to catch the bus to the next town and wake up at 6am, which is a 4 hour difference. I can't wake up before 10, how am I meant to wake up at 6?! I'm stressing because I have to eat at certain times, and waking up will change the food routine and ahhh! It'll make me worse, I know it will.

I've been talking to my mum a lot and she is very supportive, but i'm so worried. Last year, my attendence was around 70% and although I was still pretty poorly, I wasn't half as bad as I am now.. and my attendence at college for the past 3 months is about 60%.

I'm falling sooo behind at college and I can get myself to revise at home, because my brain isn't taking much information in, and the fact that I don't understand philosophy in the first place.

I want to drop that subject but then i'll have more frees at college, which means more of a chance of sleeping, which I can't really do at college and ohh my gosh.

I need to calm down here!! Anyone else had this problem?!

Hey Tasha :)
Sorry to hear you're struggling. Judging by your age and other posts, you are in your AS year at college? I know all too well how stressful it can be especially when unwell. I struggled for diagnosis through my first year at college too and it meant my attendance and performance suffered so I can understand what you are going through.

Are your college aware of your health and how it's affecting you at the moment? They may be able to provide you with some support and can be more understanding if you were to be late due to needing to sleep or if you needed a quiet place to sleep in the day. Do you have any arrangements for the exam i.e. special consideration, a separate room closer to a bathroom just in case? Your college may be able to organise something like this which won't remove the stress of the actual exam but may make it a bit more comfortable.

Hope you get some relief soon x

Vickie - i've been at college only a couple of months. September and October were fine because I had no flare up so the college don't really know anything.
My last school just thought I had IBS, so maybe the college might think so too. Not sure though.

I've spoken to my learning coach, but he's only just left university and just got this job and is all about having fun and not taking much seriously - got attitude when you're working and enjoying college with out issues! I've told him that i'm undergoing hospital tests and being quite poorly, and he can tell by my attendence, but he can't do much or help out because that's not his role. Not sure who to talk to, but i've begged my mum for a meeting at college to explain everything. Just gotta wait and find out what is happening with the doctors first.

I had exam arrangements at school, but didn't think I would need anything at college because when they said it was IBS, and I was having a tough time at school, we thought it might go away for college and it's a bit late now with the upcoming exams.

It's really stressful having to think about doctors, college, exams, etc! Mum is trying to get me to calm down and take one day at a time, but it's hard because I need to think a head!!

I know what you mean about people thinking it's just IBS, nothing worse than feeling so bad and then people not understanding. Even though it's not your learning coach's role, could he maybe point you to the right person to speak to about how bad things are currently and how college could help? Just until things progress with the doctors and you can get a meeting.

My school and college are combined so I didn't have to look into exam arrangements again after starting to college (they just carried over) but I know of someone who burned their writing hand on the day of an exam and they managed to get arrangements in place within the half hour before the exam so it may be worth asking even though it is close. Possibly get your GP to write a letter when you go detailing your current symptoms so they can see how you are affected despite not yet having a firm diagnosis.

Your mum is right though :) Even though there are things in the future to think about, you also need to focus on your health so taking it all one step at a time may help.
Stay strong x

I'm making a list of symptoms, triggers, time, causes etc. I've just added a new list of 'Things On My Mind'. I'll take it to the doctors when me and mum go on Wednesday and show them both. And another list of what to do about things - like the exam arrangements.

Thank you so much. Feeling a bit more calmer now :)

Take care :) xx
