Hi - i am currently 6 weeks into a flare up and have just had my meds changed following a colonoscopy.

I am seeing the consultant on Thursday and my GP thinks he will put me on azathiapine.

Anyway we are supposed to be going to Bulgaria for 2 weeks on 11th August.

I have a stricture.

Now my Q is - do i go ?

We need to pay the balance in 2 weeks time.

I went to Tennerife 3 days after being discharged from hospital after a flare up but my GP says i was mad - although my consultant said it was ok.:ybatty:

So - would you go ?

I'm crazy so I would probably go no matter what and just suffer through it. But I would ask your GI about what you should do. Best of luck with the stricture

Hmm, Bulgaria.. What's their health care like? Will you need travellers insurance to cover potential hospitalization while there? If you decide not to go, can you get your initial deposit back? If you go (with kids??) and get hospitalized, what is your 'escape' plan? Does your spouse take kids N return home, leaving you to get back on your own when/where you can? Do they stay on indefinitely till you're able to travel? All kinds of things to consider here?

heck Fruitloop, i'd hate to advise you yes or no. i'd go with Kev's thoughts on the medical support out there, and how you would arrange things for the kids if you did need hospital treatment whilst away. and i'd also agree with Jeff in that you should ask your consultant's advice.

difficult call. sorry i can't be of more help.

Bulgaria's health care is not great when comparing most of the rest of the European Union, but it is far from a third world country.

If you asked me what *should* I do, I'd say to stay at home. In reality, I'd go anyway. This disease gets in the too much as it is.

I had to miss a holiday in spain once.
4 of us were supposed to be going - Me, my friend, mum, and her friend. Coz i couldnt go my mum had to end up giving the money back to my friend, and loosing the deposit, so not only did we not get a holiday, we ended up MORE out of pocket. However.....there was NO WAY I could have or should have gone, and im glad i didnt.

Thanks Kev - that's a good list to be going through.

We have been to Bulgaria before and whilst it is by no means third world I don't think I would relish surgery over there but who knows ?

If we do not go then we lose the initial deposit of £600 (think roughly $1000).

If we go and I am ill then the escape plan is to take a credit card and fly home asap - obviously if i was admitted then that may not happen but it is only a four hour flight so may be possible.

On a positive thought it is 8 weeks away and the consultant *should* have got things sorted out much more by then - on a negative note if a stricture blocks you have no prior notice.

I am not impressed by the idea of cancelling as it seems that then the Crohn's has won - it's not just me who misses out but the kids and hubby as well.

I think i will throw it to my consultant as in order to get the insurance he needs to say yes anyway.

Fingers crossed:smile:

I forgot you were from England.

I think that you're E111/EHIC *should* cover a medivac back to the UK. You might want to look at travel insurance as well.

I turned down a certain promotion at my job because it would have me traveling across the world. Personally I cannot risk being in some strange land and have a serious problem requiring attention. For starters not sure my insurance would cover it and then there is the matter of the medical care itself.
