Changes in the gut mycobiome in pediatric patients in relation to the clinical activity of Crohn's disease

If you define "Crohn's disease" narrowly enough you can probably make it disappear entirely. All the same same people will still get just as sick. And we will still be treating their illness with the same drugs with which we currently treat Crohn's disease, but we simply will be calling it...

    Firefly treatment?

Pain is a common symptom of Crohn's disease, but it is by no means universal. In fact , since Crohn's is such a variable disease, I don't think there is any symptom that every Crohn's patient gets. Firefly treatment is a fringe or "alternative" medical treatment where pain and inflammation are...

Changes in the gut mycobiome in pediatric patients in relation to the clinical activity of Crohn's disease

That's the unanswered question for pretty much every derangement of the of the gut organisms observed in Crohn's: is the derangement a cause of or an effect of the Crohn's?

    My History

Hi Rudy, Welcome to the forum. It's a relief to have a diagnosis at at last, as many of us here know. But having gotten a diagnosis of Crohn's disease, it's not a good idea to leave it untreated. The damage to your gut caused by Crohn's disease is cumulative. Your body battles hard to heal...

    Biospy

Yes, the report more or less means that the tissue looked normal - no disease seen. In my colonoscopies the doc normally takes several biopsies along the way, so taking only one does seem rather limited.

    Put my mind at ease?

You are correct that the MRI report is consistent with your not having active IBD. However, it does not necessarily mean that you have IBS. IBS has its own diagnostic criteria, much of which cannot be assessed by MRI.

Why isn't EEN a main treatment over prednisone?

It's seldom used for adults because adults are in control of their own eating, and very few adults can stick to a diet with no solid food - just too restrictive. Same for teenagers. But little kids can have their diet controlled by their parents - making EEN a feasible option.

    Medicare Coverage for Stelara

I went on Medicare.gov and pretended I lived in Panama City, FL and it offered me the same $20K plans as here in San Diego, bit it did not turn up any Kaiser Advantage plans. Too bad.

    Medicare Coverage for Stelara

Not all the Part D plans charge the full amount but most do. There are two plans here in the San Diego area that offer Stelara coverage for about $20K for an entire year (assuming a 90 mg dose administered every 60 days). And Kaiser will charge only about $6K for an entire year, but again, you...

    Medicare Coverage for Stelara

Medicare coverage for Stelara as a medical procedure under Part B, if administered by a health professional at a Drs office of infusion center ended in October, 2021 when CMS added Stelara to the SAD list (Self Administered Drugs). So now nearly all traditional Medicare plans cover Stelara...

    Ketogenic diet??

Keto is the dietary fad of the moment. Remember starch blockers? Or how about the Scarsdale Diet? Or the Beverly Hills Diet? Or the Blood Type Diet? The list of failed fad diets is endless. Avoiding gluten as though it were cyanide was the dietary panacea of just a few years ago. Now it's...

Can you eat any food once you get in remission?

Yes, I can eat more or less any food in remission, but I never was able to identify any specifically troublesome food in the first place. There were no "trigger foods" for me as far as I could tell. But one thing I've learned about food and Crohn's is that every case is different. Just because...

Scientists Get a Better Understanding of How Stress Can Inflame the Gut in IBD Patients

" Psychological stress is known to worsen the gut inflammation caused by certain bowel diseases. Now scientists have found out why. New research1 outlines a sweeping narrative that begins with chemical cues produced in the brain and ends with immune cells in the gut — a sequence that spells...

Digital twin opens way to effective treatment of inflammatory diseases

I think this might evolve into an interesting research tool, but I don't think we will any time soon see a direct therapeutic tool that consists of creating digital twins for everybody and actually prescribing therapy based on what the digital model predicts. Since the actual biological system...

    Infliximab levels

86 is quite high for anti-drug antibodies against Remicade. It varies from one type of test to another, but generally numbers higher than 10 are considered positive. I'm guessing the immunosuppressant you are getting is probably mercaptopurine, also known as 6-MP. Several of its brand names...

    Quick question

Several things: Technical feasibility - not all surgeries can be done via laparoscope Surgeon's skill - not all surgeons are trained/experienced in laparoscopic surgery Surgeon's preference - the surgeon may judge that a given case would be best done by a given method - better chances of a...

    Heard from Doc today

I've learned to never underestimate the ability of Crohn's disease to throw a curve ball. The pericardium is said to be an exceedingly rare site for an extra-intestinal manifestation of Crohn's - only about a dozen or so cases reported in the medical literature. But that rarity didn't prevent...

    Heard from Doc today

IBD itself increases the risk of blood clots 3-4 fold. Inflammation is part of it, but there are other IBD-related factors as well. I've suffered DVTs myself, and I blame it on the Crohn's. https://thrombosis.org/2021/04/inflammatory-bowel-disease-and-blood-clots-whats-the-connection/
