12 year old son has crohn's since he was 7 just flared up again after 3 years of remission - put on steriods but did not work now had 1 treatment of remicade - seemed to work but still had to stay on prednisole and metrotraxate was hoping he would be taking off of these. Any body else on remicade do they take you off of prednisole or what? worried about so many drugs to take for 12 year old.

My son is 16 and was diagnosed earlier this year. He started on steroids while we were waiting on Remicade appt. He started tapering from 40mg on the day he got his first infusion at 5mg a week. We just had to add methotrexate as Remicade wasn't quite getting the job done. Right before adding the methotrexate we did a short burst of steroids, also.
They'll take him off Prednisone when the inflammation starts to go down. Its very common to be treated with more than one medication at a time. I know its scary but his life an well being are at stake right now. Eventually he'll be off the Prednisone and possibly off of Methotrexate as well in the furute.

I have heard of having all of these drugs used at one time. Sounds like it will be short term. Praying for another remission for your sweet boy!

Good to hear he's improving.
Make sure when the prednisone is no longer seen as necessary that you do a slow taper. Eliminating the prednisone quickly will cause serious withdrawal (not harmful in the long run, but very unpleasant in the short run, i.e. weeks to months).

DS was on pred when he started remicade then he started a slow wean.
He had been on pred and Mtx prior to remicade and that was stopped for now.
Check out the parents forum .
DS is 8 and remicade has been wonderful for him.
He was dx last year at age 7.
