Growing up as a young child I always knew something wasn't right deep down inside. I used to go to the restroom and be in such severe pain that I would pray to God for it to stop. I struggled with this until about the age of nine when I found a small amount of blood in my stool. I went into a panic since I was so young, but little did I know it would be the best thing to happen to me. That week I went to my family doctor and told him my symptoms. My doctor sent me to get an Upper/Lower GI with the barium and they diagnosed me with acid reflux. I was put on zantac and sent home. After a few months my grandmother was hospitalized and diagnosed with crohn's disease at around age 76 and a little after my mother was diagnosed. From this we came to the conclusion I might possibly have it as well. I ended up getting my first colonoscopy at age ten and finding out I very well did have crohn's. I was put on many medications such as imuran and remicade, but they didn't help and going into high school I started taking asacal, calcium, and a multi-vitamin. Throughtout highschool I was under a ton of stress since my mother was out all hours of the night drinking, ate terrible and made myself sick worrying about having to use the restroom frequently, so I ended up missing about 30 days a year up until finishing junior year. Senior year I couldn't go back to the school due to financial problems and decided to try online schooling.... It didn't work and I ended up dropping out for almost two years. I moved in with my dad and in the beginning I was going out to the bar under-age drinking making myself worse, but then I met the girl of my dreams and she changed everything. Since we have met I got my GED, have a full time job, and now I'm in college studying Healthcare Administration. I'm happy to say I feel amazing and I don't even worry about the crohn's making me sick anymore and actually it barely even bothers me as long as I take my medicine. Thanks for reading :)

Hello Anthony and welcome to the forum here..:)
I am glad you are where you are at now.. Things seem to be good at the moment.
Sounds like you have a keeper in your life...
Really happy for you ..
Take care..

:bigwave: Kudos for you that you got out from under your mom's lifestyle and found the person who is there for you thick and thin. You sound like you were on your own to find for yourself alot. Do you have any siblings? I know that Crohns can strike anyone at any time but it is unusual that your grandmother got it so late...could of been a blessing.

My family is loaded with IBD but we are not a close family. My father and mother split when I was young and we did fend for ourselves as my mom was rarely home, not a drinker but never home.

You have wonderful support with your girlfriend and changed your life around and inspite of this disease and your parents you did a wonder job!

Yeah we have to take our medications to get things under control, good that you are not oblivious to that. Welcome again and nice to have you aboard!! ;)

I have a younger sister going through the same thing with my mother, but she's already in her teens so she won't have to much longer. I have a very similar story and many people on both sides of my family have IBD & UC, but only my grandmother, mother, and myself have crohn's. I'm simply taking asacol, multi-vitamin, and calcium again I think a lot of my sickness was the stress, eating habits, and mentally worrying about restroom trips, etc...

I'm glad you found someone to help you and provide support, and I'm glad your Crohn's is under control. I find having a good support system helps a lot.
