The GI mentioned today that 6-MP would be the maintenance drug for Grace in a month or two.

Any experience with this drug and young kids?

BTW- I will be pushing for LDN. However if for some reason that doesn't happen I would like to be prepared for 6-MP.

Thanks, Farmwife

Not sure about young kids, but we are on week 2 and so far so good. Holding all fingers and thumbs ;)

Lucy has been on it for a year but we are on our last few weeks as hopefully the infliximab will take over. The biggest issue with 6mp is the bloodwork , weekly at first for 8 weeks, 2 weekly for another8 and then monthly and eventually going to 3 monthly. I don't know how grace is with bloods but definitely use the elma cream. There are risks associAted with the drug but sometimes as parents of kids with ibd we have to take the risk as the alternative is worse. Hard decision ahead farm wife but be guided by your GI in conjunction with your own research .

Hey FW - I would keep this on your other thread to help everyone keep up. May Insiffesr moving it?

Claire started 6mp at age 5. No real problems for almost 2 years.

My son is taking 6mp, we just had some bloods done and his levels are not quite right, he has been fine with taking this, we now need to take another drug to assist the 6mp x

We are close to starting 6mp as well and the only bit of advice is that I've had two highly respected GI's say its a tried and true drug and if it doesn't work, once stopped, any side effects or issues resolve almost immediately.

That is nice to hear, Mehita.

I think this is the maintenance med we're looking at for the future too...

My son had been on 6mp for 2 and half years with no problems (touch wood). Hope it works for your little one too. xxxx

6mp is better tested/well-known than LDN. It was used as a cancer drug for a long time first. Still, none of the options are either desirable or satisfying! Alex was 8 when he started 6mp.

my son took it for almost 2 years. Just minor side effects and they monitor his pancreas levels. It hasn't done much for him, but if it works, the effects shouldn't be too bad. Just a lower immune system and my son did get some mouth sores sometimes.

DS was 7 at the time and took it for eight months.
No real issues - just liver levels that did not cooperate but you wouldn't know that - only by blood .
Good luck
